Box Score FROSTBURG, Md. – Junior Allison Kirk netted two goals and the Bridgewater Eagles field hockey team controlled play throughout the contest in a 4-1 non-conference victory on Sunday afternoon at Frostburg State.
In a half that was dominated by the Bridgewater offense, the Eagles went to the locker room with just a single goal on the board. At the 15:15 mark of the first half, the Eagles earned a corner and capitalized on the opportunity. Junior Rachael Loy fired a pass to the point to Caroline Augsburger and the senior ripped a hard shot that was chipped in the air by the stick of Kirk. The Frostburg State defense attempted to deflect the ball out of the air, but it fell to the ground in the cage to hand Bridgewater a 1-0 lead. The goal was Kirk's first of the season.
Bridgewater (5-5) maintained the pressure at the offensive end but couldn't get back on the scoreboard as the game went to the intermission with the Eagles up by a 1-0 score. The Eagles outshot the Bobcats by a 16-1 margin in the first half.
Early in the second half, Bridgewater extended its lead. Shannon Strosser delivered a pass to Kirk early in the 41st minute and the junior found back of the cage to extend the Bridgewater advantage to 2-0.
Freshman Elizabeth Washington added an insurance goal later in the second stanza. Washington had her shot blocked and picked up the rebound and fired a shot into the net, extending the Bridgewater lead to 3-0.
Following the Washington goal, Frostburg State (5-5) responded in a hurry. At the 51:25 mark, a pass from Jackie Best found the stick of Naja Butler and Butler's shot went by Amanda Harper and into the goal to cut the Bridgewater lead to 3-1 with less than 19 minutes to play.
The Eagles had the final say in the contest. On another corner it was Loy to Augsburger as Augsburger's hard shot deflected high in the air and into the cage to finalize the scoring and send Bridgewater home with a 4-1 victory.
Bridgewater registered a season-high 33 shots in the win with Kirk's two-goal outing leading the way.
Harper turned away two Bobcats shots to secure her third win of the season.
Three different players registered shots for Frostburg State in the loss with Butler's goal leading the way.
Goalkeeper Jacqueline Gover made 14 saves in the loss.
Bridgewater returns to action on Tuesday against Washington and Lee. Start time against the Generals is set for 7 p.m.
