BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College volleyball team increased its win streak to four in a row following a 3-0 (8-25, 7-25, 19-25) victory over ODAC opponent Hollins University at home Tuesday evening in Nininger Hall.
The conference contest served as the Eagles 2015 Dig Pink match. It's the fifth season the Eagles have raised money through a Dig Pink match to donate to the Side-Out Foundation.
The Side-Out Foundation helps people with breast cancer regain control of their lives. The money goes towards clinical trials which have successfully extended the lives of people with stage 4 breast cancer.
Entering the match, the Eagles (7-12, 3-4 ODAC) were coming off a 2-0 finish during their tri-match Oct. 10. The team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Southern Virginia in five sets and defeated Virginia Union in three straight sets.
Freshman Deja Booker posted 8 kills, freshman Jenna Hamra registered 15 assists and four service aces and Macon Frey tallied 16 digs against Hollins (3-15, 0-6 ODAC).
The Eagles started the match red-hot with 16 kills and a hitting percentage of .480 in the first set.
Sophomore Carleigh Studtmann hammered a kill to put the Eagles ahead, 10-3, and the team never let up to take the early match lead.
In the second set, Hollins committed 11 errors and produced only seven points as the Eagles went up 2-0 with ease.
The third set was the closest game of the match. Hollins' Rikki Martinez delivered a kill for an 8-all score, but the Eagles began to pull away after a 6-0 run.
Freshman Danielle McKelvey blasted the match-winning kill to end the match and give the Eagles their second straight conference victory.
The Eagles return to action with another league matchup against Washington and Lee on the road Friday, Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m.
