Ellis' First Career Goal Leads BC Past Hendrix

Box Score

SALEM, Va. – Defender Katie Ellis' first career goal was the game-winner as the Bridgewater College field hockey team tacked on two more late for a 3-0 victory over Hendrix College on Thursday.

The contest was played at a neutral site at Roanoke College's Kerr Stadium, with Hendrix coming up north to play three straight games against ODAC competition (Bridgewater, Randolph-Macon and Roanoke).

After an opening 26 minutes that saw Hendrix goalie Gabryele Pochron ring up 10 saves without allowing a goal, the Eagles were finally awarded a penalty stroke.

Ellis stepped up from her normal defensive position and beat Pochron to get Bridgewater on the scoreboard.

The score remained 1-0 until the final 14 minutes. Another Eagle recorded her first collegiate goal as freshman Tessa Tierson followed up Taylor Prillaman's rebound and finished it off.

Bridgewater would add a third in the 65th minute, following a penalty corner. Elizabeth Washington played it in to Shannon Strosser, who fed Allison Kirk for the final 3-0 tally.

Pochron, a two-time All-Region goalkeeper, finished with 19 saves for Hendrix.

Pochron stopped attempts from Alenka Ferrufino, Rachael Loy and Washington, all in the opening 2:04 of the game. BC had six penalty corners in the first seven minutes, with the final two ending with Pochron saves against Loy.

Loy, who totaled a game-high 10 shot attempts, forced another save by Pochron in the 23rd minute. The Hendrix goalie went into double-digits with a stop on Prillaman just before Ellis's penalty stroke goal.

Ultimately, the Eagles would hold a 35-3 advantage in shots and a 22-3 statistical edge in corners.

Freshman Hannah Rioux made one save in each half to record the shutout for Bridgewater.

The Eagles improve to 5-7 overall and will host Bethany on Sunday at noon back on campus. Bridgewater will celebrate Senior Day and recognize its seven graduating student-athletes- Loy, Prillaman, Ferrufino, Kirk, Ashley White, Sarah Rozell and Caroline Fletcher.
