BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College Eagles rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat Hampden-Sydney, 2-1, Saturday afternoon in ODAC men's soccer action.
The victory was the second straight conference win this week for Bridgewater as the Eagles improved to 2-5 in the ODAC and 5-7-1 overall. The Tigers dropped to 6-7 overall and 1-6 in the conference.
The Tigers took the lead with a goal at the 30:19 mark of the first half. Hunter Wieland possessed the ball for the Tigers near the end line just to the right of the goal. Wieland touched a pass back to the middle of the box and Robert Kerby booted the ball past Bridgewater keeper Mark Davis from 12 yards out to put the Tigers on the board.
Bridgewater scored the equalizer early in the second half behind a strong individual play from Logan McGlynn. McGlynn started his run from near midfield and split a pair of defenders. He carried the ball to the top of the box on the right side and from there he beat Tigers' keeper Cameron McFarlane to the far post, tying the score in the 52nd minute.
The Eagles scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 70th minute. Chase Jones had a throw in from the near side and his throw bounced in the box. Adam Weisenborn was able to head the ball into the net from close range for a 2-1 Eagles lead.
Bridgewater held a slim 11-9 edge in shots while the Tigers led in corner kicks 3-2. McGlynn and Ben Lewis each took three shots for the Eagles.
Davis was once again solid in goal, finishing the day with five assists. McFarlane tallied four assists for the Tigers.
Bridgewater returns to action Wednesday when it makes the long trip to Emory & Henry for an important ODAC contest with the Wasps. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
