Bridgewater Powers past Eastern Mennonite 3-0

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -
With a potential playoff spot on the line, the Bridgewater College volleyball team dominated Eastern Mennonite during a 3-0 (14-25, 19-25, 16-25) victory at home in Nininger Hall Wednesday Evening.

Entering the match, the Eagles needed a win and a Randolph College lost in the Randolph-Lynchburg contest to secure the eighth seed in the ODAC conference tournament.

However, Randolph rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Lynchburg 3-2 (17-25, 13-25, 25-23, 22-14, 17-15) to claim a spot in the conference tournament.

The Eagles also celebrated Senior Day during the ODAC contest. The team recognized middle hitter Jette Wade, defensive specialist Nikki Snyder and also student managers Christina Villagomez and Rachel Donaldson before the start of the match.

Against the Royals, the Eagles posted 34 kills, 32 assists, 43 digs and six service aces as a team.

Junior Abby Mills paced the offense with eight kills to go along with nine digs. Freshman Jenna Hamra recorded a double-double with 18 assists and 10 digs and sophomore Macon Frey also tabbed 10 digs.

In the first period, the Eagles jumped out to a 16-6 lead following an attack error from the Royals.

A bad set from the Royals' Maria Yoder gave the Eagles a 20-10 lead, and the Eagles closed out the set with a service ace from Hamra.

During the second set, the Royals grabbed the early momentum to claim a 10-6 advantage.

Nonetheless, the Eagles clawed back into the game, and sophomore Sarah Temple hammered a kill for an Eagles' 18-14 lead.

Frey delivered a service ace for a 20-14 margin, and the Eagles held on to take a 2-0 match lead.

The Eagles saved their best game for the third set by tallying 13 kills on a .440 hitting percentage and committed only two errors to close out the match.

Mills blasted a kill to lift the Eagles to a 21-12 lead, and an attack error from the Royals gave the Eagles match point.

The Eagles will wrap up the season with a trip to Atlanta to compete in the Emory Invitational on Oct. 30-31. The team will square off against Millsaps (1:30 p.m.) and Emory (4 p.m.) Oct. 30, and end the tournament with a match against Berry (10 a.m.) Oct. 31.
