Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College took control of Tuesday's men's soccer contest with two goals in the first 15 minutes and went on to win the non-conference game 3-0 over Averett University.
The Eagles put pressure on the Cougars defense from the opening whistle and scored the game's first goal in the 12th minute. Averett's defenders misplayed a ball near the top of the box and Alex Farrington came away with the loose ball. Farrington dribbled around Averett keeper John Matrisciano and made a sliding shot into the open goal to put the Eagles on top 1-0.
Bridgewater's front line continued to control the play and scored again in the 14th minute. Ben Lewis took the ball away from an Averett player near midfield and pushed the ball ahead to Connor Henderson. Henderson passed the ball to Renato Grgic near the top of the box and Grgic split two defenders and slipped his shot just inside the post from 20 yards out, making the score 2-0.
The score remained 2-0 until the 88th minute when the Eagles tallied their final goal off a corner kick opportunity. Logan McGlynn served the ball into the box and Jose Rodriguez blasted a shot from straight on past the keeper, making the final score 3-0.
The Eagles held a commanding 20-7 edge in shot attempts and a 4-1 margin in corner kicks. Adam Weisenborn led the team with three shots while Ricky Capuano and Noah Malpass each put two shots on goal.
Bridgewater keeper Mark Davis registered his third shutout of the season and finished the contest with two saves. Averett's Matrisciano had seven saves.
Bridgewater is now 3-6-1 on the season while the Cougars drop to 2-8.
The Eagles return to action Saturday evening for an important ODAC contest at Roanoke College. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
