Knights Slip Past Bridgewater In Overtime

BUENA VISTA, Va. - Southern Virginia erased a 13-point deficit in the final 11 minutes Tuesday night to force overtime and the Knights held on in the closing seconds of the extra session to defeat Bridgewater College, 92-88.

The Eagles were on fire from beyond the arc in the first half and led by as many as 12 points in the first 20 minutes.

Cameron Thurston went 3-for-3 from the field, including two buckets from long range, to give the Eagles an early 9-7 lead.

The Knights matched the Eagles point-for-point until a 7-0 spurt gave Bridgewater a double-digit lead with 7:04 left in the first half. Jesse Case made two foul shots and Romello Crowell drove the lane for a layup,  giving the Eagles a 31-24 lead. Following a Knights turnover, Logan Seacrist knocked down a long 3-pointer for a 34-24 Eagles lead.

The Eagles took their biggest lead of the first half when Case followed two free throws with a 3-pointer from the corner, giving Bridgewater a 39-27 lead with 4:55 left in the half.

Southern Virginia trimmed the margin to seven before another 3-pointer by Thurston made the score 44-34. After a jumper by Southern Virginia's Cale Thornton, Thurston hit a floater in the lane to send the Eagles to the locker room with a 46-36 halftime lead.

Bridgewater shot 59.3 percent from the floor in the opening half, including an astounding 9-of-11 from 3-point range.

The Knights opened the second half with a 7-0 spurt to trim the margin to three points, but the Eagles withstood the early run and responded with a 14-4 flurry to take their biggest lead of the game.

After the Knights cut the lead to three, Norman Barnes scored from in close and Seacrist tallied from beyond the arc to push the lead back to eight, 51-43.

Justin Langford hit a jumper for the Knights, but two foul shots by Efe Balfour and a 3-pointer by De'Quan Whiting pushed the advantage back to double figures, 56-45.

Southern Virginia scored on an inside bucket from David Baety, but layups by Trenton Ray and Whiting put the Eagles on top, 60-47, with 12:37 left to play.

The Knights began chipping away at the deficit and a dunk by Aarun Rumbaugh capped an 18-5 run as the hosts pulled even, 65-65, with 5:55 remaining.

A 3-pointer by Baety gave the Knights their first lead of the second half, 70-69, but Case responded with a 3-pointer from the right wing to put the Eagles up 72-70 with 1:45 left.

Two free throws by Baety tied the score, 74-74, with 34 seconds left and a turnover by the Eagles with 10 seconds remaining gave the Knights a chance to win in regulation. Anders Jacobsen missed a driving layup in traffic and Balfour controlled the defensive rebound, sending the game to overtime tied at 74-74.

Bridgewater scored first in the extra session on a short jumper by Balfour, but a layup by Rumbaugh evened the score at 76-76. Thurston tallied on a short jumper for the Eagles before Cale Thornton hit the first of two free throws to pull the Knights to within one, 78-77, with 2:26 left. Thornton missed his second free throw, but the Knights retained possession when the Eagles were unable to control the rebound.

Southern Virginia then went on a 12-1 run to open up an 89-79 lead with just 22 seconds left.

The Eagles, however, weren't quite finished as 3-pointers by Thurston, DJ Caldwell and Case cut the deficit back to three, 91-88, with two seconds left. Following Case's 3-pointer, the Eagles fouled Rumbaugh with two ticks left on the clock. Rumbaugh missed his first free throw, but made the second to clinch the 92-88 Southern Virginia victory.

Thurston led the Eagles with a career-high 24 points with  17 of those coming in the first half. Case scored a career-high 17 and Seacrist added 12.

All five Southern Virginia starters scored in double figures with Baety leading the Knights with 20 points.

Bridgewater shot 46.8 percent (29-for-62) from the floor, including a 15-for-28 effort from 3-point range.

The Eagles were outrebounded by a 42-30 margin and turned the ball over 17 times compared to just 11 for the Knights. The turnover discrepancy and 17 offensive rebounds allowed the Knights to take 20 more shots attempts during the game.

Bridgewater, now 1-3, opens ODAC play Saturday when the Eagles host Lynchburg College.
