Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Emory & Henry outscored Bridgewater 15-4 over the final seven minutes Wednesday night to rally for a 72-68 victory in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball action.
The Wasps are now 4-18 overall and 3-10 in the ODAC while Bridgewater drops to 10-12, 5-8 in conference play.
The Wasps got off to a strong start as a 3-pointer by Kevin Anzenberger gave the visitors an early 6-0 lead. Bridgewater tied the score with the next six points as Norman Barnes came off the bench to score two buckets and Ed Reddick added a layup.
The score was tied four more times before the Eagles grabbed their first lead of the contest, 21-20, on a Reddick bucket with 8:16 left in the first half.
The score was even at 22-22 and 24-24 before a three-point play by Welty gave the Eagles a 27-24 lead.
A 3-pointer by Anzenberger tied the score again at 31-31, but Welty countered with a 3-ball and then hit a pair of foul shots to put the Eagles up by five, 36-31, with 1:18 remaining in the half.
Myles Turner hit two free throws for the Wasps before Marcus Curry rattled in a short jumper to give the Eagles a 38-33 lead at the break.
For the first 11 minutes of the second half the two teams traded points. Bridgewater led during the entire stretch, but never by more than six points. Two free throws by Reddick with 8:31 left gave Bridgewater its biggest lead of the second half, 60-53.
Buckets by Turner and Anzenberger sliced the margin to three before another Reddick layup gave the Eagles a 62-57 advantage.
Bridgewater matched its biggest margin with two foul shots by Welty making the score 64-57 with 6:48 remaining. The Eagles, however, then went scoreless for the more than four minutes as the Wasps scored 10 unanswered points to forge ahead.
Turner converted a three-point play to trim the margin to four with 5:45 left and a Turner foul shot at the 5:08 mark sliced the deficit to 64-61. The Wasps continued to find the way to the charity stripe and two foul shots by Anzenberger made it a one-point game with 4:39 left. Ryan Gravley was the next Emory & Henry player to toe the foul line and he made two free throws to give the Wasps a 65-64 lead with 3:55 on the clock.
The dry spell continued for the Eagles and a jumper by Anzenberger puts the Wasps out front 67-64 with 3:17 left to play.
The Eagles' drought finally ended with 2:02 remaining when Curry made 1-of-2 at the foul line to make it a two-point game. Anzenberger came up big once again for the Wasps as his layup in traffic gave Emory & Henry a 69-65 cushion at the 1:38 mark.
Welty missed a 3-pointer at the other end and Anzenberger grabbed the rebound and was fouled. He made 1-of-2 at the line for a 70-65 Wasps lead with 1:10 left.
Eagles' guard Zach Hunter then stepped up and knocked down a big 3-pointer with 52 seconds left to slice the Wasps advantage to two, 70-68. Bridgewater elected not to foul on the next possession, hoping to get a key defensive stop. With the shot clock approaching zero, the Wasps turned the ball over with 18 seconds left, giving the Eagles possession with a chance to tie with a two or take the lead with a 3-pointer.
Bridgewater got the ball to its leading scorer, but Reddick's 10-footer in traffic was short and the Wasps controlled the rebound. John Shelor hit two free throws with a second left to ice the Emory & Henry victory.
Reddick scored 20 points for the Eagles while Welty contributed 14 points and 12 rebounds. Anzenberger scored a game-high 22 points to pace four Emory & Henry players in double digits. Turner and Chase Branscomb each scored 13 points and Brandon Self added 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Eagles are back in action Saturday when they travel to Greensboro, N.C., to play Guilford College. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
