Quakers Hold Off Eagles In Second Half To Take 73-66 Victory

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College took an 11-point halftime lead Saturday and held on down the stretch to defeat Bridgewater College, 73-66, at the Ragan-Brown Fieldhouse.

With the victory, the Quakers improved 17-6 overall and 10-4 in the conference play. The Eagles are now 10-13 overall and 5-9 in the ODAC. Bridgewater has now lost four straight.

Bridgewater was hampered in the first half as leading scorer Ed Reddick was hit with two early foul calls.

Despite playing most of the first half with Reddick on the bench, the Eagles managed to stay within striking distance.

The Quakers jumped out to an early 12-4 lead, but the Eagles responded with an 11-2 run to take their first lead of the game. Matthew Hunter and Benaiah Wise sandwiched 3-pointers around a layup by Guilford's Sanders Rohs, pulling the Eagles to with 14-10. Another 3-pointer by Matt Hunter and a layup by De Mallory gave Bridgewater a 15-14 lead just past the midway point of the first half.

A 3-pointer by Matt McCarthy swung the lead back to Guilford, but Aaron Adams drove the lane for a layup and Wise added a jumper for a 19-17 Eagles lead at the 7:44 mark.

Guilford then ripped off a 10-0 spurt to take an eight-point lead. Will Koppenhaver tied the score with a layup and a 3-pointer by McCarthy put the Quakers on top 22-19. Rohs tacked on five straight points for the Quakers, making the score 27-19, with 3:57 left in the opening half.

Kyle Welty hit a jumper for BC, but two foul shots by Jarred Hinton kept the Quakers out front by eight. Norman Barnes scored for the Eagles on a short jumper, but the Quakers closed the half with a 5-0 run to lead 34-23 at the break.

Guilford led the entire half with its largest lead of 13 points coming at the 14:46 mark when Rohs hit a 3-pointer, making the score 48-35.

The Quakers were unable to put the Eagles away and several times in the closing minutes Bridgewater made a run at the hosts.

Bridgewater made its first run at the Quakers with an 8-0 spurt that sliced a 12-point deficit down to four. The Quakers led 58-46 when Jonny Rice scored from the paint with 8:57 left. Jumpers by Wise and Reddick cut the margin to eight. Reddick made 1-of-2 at the foul line and Welty converted a three-point play, slicing Guilford's lead to 58-54 with 6:22 left.

The Quakers built the margin back to eight before a jumper by Keonte Dennis and a free throw by Marcus Curry pulled the Eagles to within 64-59 with 3:24 remaining.

The Eagles pulled to within five on two more occasions, but each time the Quakers responded. Two foul shots by Reddick made the score 66-61 with 2:51 left. McCarthy missed a jumper but the Eagles were unable to come up with the rebound, giving Guilford a new shot clock. Koppenhaver made the extra possession count as his jumper pushed the Guilford lead back to seven, 68-61.

After a free throw by Hinton gave the Quakers a 69-61 lead, Curry knocked down a 3-pointer with 1:21 left cut Guilford's edge to 69-64.

Guilford's Zachary Houston then went to the foul line and knocked down two clutch free throws with 53 seconds left to push the margin back to seven, 71-64.

Welty hit 8-of-15 shots on the day and led the Eagles with 19 points. Reddick bounced back from a scoreless first half to score 13 points in the final 20 minutes. Wise came off the bench to add 10 points.

McCarthy paced the Quakers with 19 points and Rice scored 14.

Free throw shooting and rebounding went a long way in determining the outcome of the contest. Guilford made 17-of-27 free throws while the Eagles made less than 50 percent from the line, connecting on just 7-of-15. The Quakers controlled the glass by a 46-33 margin. Guilford grabbed 21 offensive rebounds which led to 17 second-chance points. Rice pulled down eight rebounds for the Quakers while Welty and Dennis each grabbed six for the Eagles.

Bridgewater will try to get back on the winning side of the ledger Wednesday evening when they host rival Eastern Mennonite. Game time is set for a 7:00 p.m. tip.
