BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College senior Ed Reddick scored a career-high 38 points Saturday afternoon but it wasn't enough as the Lynchburg College Hornets held on for a 77-74 victory at Nininger Hall.
Lynchburg finishes the regular season with a 16-9 overall record and a 9-7 mark in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Bridgewater drops to 11-14 overall and 6-10 in the conference.
The teams traded big runs in a first half that ended with the Eagles holding a two-point lead.
Lynchburg led early, 16-15, before the Eagles went on a 9-0 spurt. A layup by Marcus Curry gave the Eagles the lead and a 3-pointer by Kyle Welty made the score 30-16. Welty added two more jumpers, giving Bridgewater a 24-16 lead with 7:22 left in the half.
Following a Hornets timeout, it was Lynchburg's turn to make a run. The Hornets scored 10 unanswered points, eight from the foul line, to regain the lead, 26-24. Big man Alex Graves was 6-for-6 at the line during the spurt.
The Eagles responded with an 11-2 flurry to forge back ahead. A three-point play by Reddick gave the Eagles a one-point edge, but Zach Burnett answered with a layup for a 28-27 Hornets lead. Norman Barnes scored four straight points and Reddick added 1-of-2 at the line, making the score 32-28. Welty capped the Eagles' run with a three-point play, giving BC a 35-28 lead with 1:08 left in the half.
Lynchburg provided the final spurt of the half as the Hornets scored five unanswered points in the final minute to trim Bridgewater's lead to 35-33 at the half.
A layup by Graves gave the Hornets a six-point, 49-43, as the second half neared its midway point. The Eagles then hit 5-of-6 free throws over the next two minutes to trim the Hornets lead down to one.
The Eagles trailed by two with 7:43 left, but the Hornets reeled off an 8-1 spurt to take their biggest lead of the game. Austen Arnold scored five straight points before a free throw by Reddick pulled the Eagles to within six, 60-54. Arnold then knocked down a long 3-pointer to put the Hornets up 63-54 with 6:25 remaining.
The Eagles whittled away at the margin in the final minutes, but Arnold made eight straight foul shots to keep Lynchburg out front.
After two free throws by Arnold made the score 75-70, Curry scored from the baseline to pull the Eagles within three. Curry was fouled on his shot, but his free throw was short. Teammate Logan Seacrist came up with a huge offensive rebound and got the ball to Reddick who was fouled inside. Reddick made both three throws to make it a one-point game, 75-74, with 6.8 seconds left.
The Eagles fouled immediately and Daniel Rowe went to the line and hit two clutch free throws for a three-point lead, 77-74, with six ticks remaining on the clock. The Eagles had one last chance to force overtime, but were unable to get off a shot before the buzzer
Reddick made 11-of-19 field goal attempts and 16-of-20 free throws to account for his 38 points. He also grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Eagles to a 45-35 edge on the boards. Welty added 17 points for the Eagles.
Arnold led four Hornets in double digits with 26 points. Graves scored 15 and Burnett added 12. Omar Kemp came off the bench to contribute 11 points.
The Eagles will be back in action Monday night in the opening round of the ODAC tournament. The opponent and site for Monday's game will be announced following the conclusion of this weekend's games.
