Eagles Beat Hanover 11-6 in Home Opener

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -
The Bridgewater College men's lacrosse team rode a dominant first three quarters to its first victory of the 2015 season, 11-6 over visiting Hanover on Monday afternoon.

Blake Mann and Derrick Daniels each contributed a hat trick and an assist to the Eagles' cause, while Rob Simmons had a trio of assists. Jeff Strickland added three points on a goal and two helpers.

Freshman Tyler Nieto had an outstanding day on the faceoff dot, winning 13-of-15 draws (including every faceoff he took in the first half) and picking up 11 ground balls.

Daniels and Hanover's Brock Warner traded goals early in the contest. Thomas Maher nearly gave BC the lead, hitting the post on Bridgewater's first man-up opportunity of the contest.

The Eagles did take the lead for good in the first quarter on their second man-up chance, with Strickland feeding Mann. Bridgewater goalie Michael Fairley made a great with 35 seconds left in the opening period to protect the one-goal advantage.

The Eagles opened up the game with four goals each in the second and third quarters. Simmons found Strickland all alone in front of goal with a great pass for a 3-1 lead. Just 20 seconds later Tylden Mosby ripped another shot in for the Eagles.

Hanover was held scoreless in the second quarter, including a nice save by Fairley to deny Warner on a Hanover man-up opportunity.

With 13:04 remaining in the third period, Maher stripped Hanover's Jacob Bell on a clear attempt. Mann picked up the ground ball and was in behind the defense for a 7-1 lead.

Daniel Brown's man-up goal late in the third quarter made it 10-2 Bridgewater, a lead that was extended to 11-2 by Daniels in the opening minute of the fourth.

Hanover made a run late, scoring the final four goals of the contest, but the Eagles had done plenty earlier in the game to see out the win.

The BC defense held Hanover to just two goals in the opening 47 minutes behind 10 saves from Fairley and Lucas Clark's three caused turnovers and seven ground balls. The Eagles won 18-of-21 faceoffs, caused 13 turnovers, and helped force nine failed Hanover clears.

Bridgewater is 1-1 on the season and continues a seven-game homestand on Wednesday against Southern Virginia.
