Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - Hampden-Sydney avenged an early-season loss to Bridgewater College by defeating the Eagles, 61-52, Saturday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball action.
The Tigers scored the game's first five points, but the Eagles responded with a 7-0 spurt. Ed Reddick and Aaron Adams scored from inside and Kyle Welty added a 3-pointer, giving Bridgewater a 7-0 lead.
Two foul shots by Mitch Owens tied the score before buckets by Zach Hunter and Keonte Dennis pushed the Eagles to an 11-7 lead.
Hampden-Sydney (13-7, 6-5 ODAC) forged ahead, 16-11, with a 9-0 run and the Tigers held the lead until Bridgewater's Logan Seacrist knocked down a 3-pointer to tie the score at 19-19 with 6:39 left in the half.
A layup by Alex Smith and a 3-ball by Greg Lewis gave the Tigers a five-point lead, but Seacrist hit again from long range, pulling the Eagles to within to 24-22.
A layup by Leon Hargrove put the Tigers on top by six, but Seacrist swished a 15-footer, cutting the Hampden-Sydney lead to four. A bucket by Lewis pushed the margin back to six before Welty hit a jumper with three seconds left in the half, trimming the Tigers edge to four, 30-26, at the break.
The teams traded points early in the second half before a 6-0 spurt gave the Tigers a nine-point lead. Hargrove hit two foul shots and Josh Katowitz added a layup to put the Tigers up by seven. Greg Lewis capped the spurt with a jumper, giving Hampden-Sydney a 45-36 lead with 11:35 left in the game.
Bridgewater (10-11, 5-7 ODAC) cut the lead to six before another 6-0 spurt pushed the Tigers lead to double digits, 51-39, with 8:34 left.
Hampden-Sydney led by as many as 17 points before a late Eagles flurry cut the lead to single digits. The Eagles trailed by 15, but a 3-pointer by Seacrist and a layup by Matthew Hunter cut the deficit to 61-51 with 2:00 left.
Seacrist hit a 15-footer with 1:28 left to cut the margin the eight, but that bucket turned out to be the final points scored in the contest.
Reddick paced the Eagles with 14 points and nine rebounds. Seacrist scored 13 points and Welty added 11.
The Eagles held Tigers leading scorer Mike Murray scoreless, but three other Tigers reached double figures. Smith led the way with 13 points while Lewis and Owens each scored 10. Murray, the Tigers point guard, torched the Eagles for 25 points earlier this season in the Bridgewater victory at Nininger Hall.
Bridgewater returns to action Wednesday evening when the Eagles host Emory & Henry. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
