Box Score 2 BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College softball team dropped two nonconference contests to visiting McDaniel College. The Eagles dropped the first contest 6-0 before falling in the second game, 10-0.
McDaniel was first on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning as Stacie Maring walked before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt. A double to left field by Lindsey Miller brought in Maring for the first run. Miller brought the score 2-0 as she reached home on a Carly Deichman single.
The Green Terror kept the Eagles at bay by striking out in order before coming back with another run in the top of the second for a 3-0 lead.
With two runs in the bottom of the third, Bridgewater found an opportunity to score as Jen Balcom reached second on an error by the pitcher to set up Rayann Foltz at third. Unfortunately the Eagles collected their last out to end the inning.
McDaniel extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the fourth with a run by Olivia Kipe before tallying two more runs in the top of the fifth for the final 6-0 score.
The Eagles attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh as Brooke Throckmorton reached first on a passed ball before advancing to second on a Jessica Dawson single for a scoring position. However McDaniel would grab the three outs needed to end the game and seal the win.
Balcom was 1-for-3 while Dawson went 1-for-1. Brianna Cox took the loss in the circle, giving up six runs on eight hits while striking out three batters and walking four.
Roxanna Aviles went 2-for-2 with one hit and two RBIs for McDaniel. Lindsey Miller went 2-for-4 with one hit and one RBI. Caroline Brehm earned her 14th win in the circle, only giving up two hits and striking out 14 batters.
Despite collecting two outs in the top of the first, McDaniel burst out of the gate for an early 6-0 lead over the Eagles. The Green Terror continued to overtake Bridgewater as they earned two more runs in the top of the second to push ahead 8-0.
Although the Eagles couldn't find a scoring opportunity, they managed to shut out McDaniel until the top of the fifth when Olivia Kipe earned 2 RBIs for a home run and closed the game in five innings.
Cox went 2-for-2 at the plate while both Dawson and Hannah Nyquist were 1-for-2. Amber Wood took the loss in the circle, giving up five runs on six hits and struck out one batter.
Jamie Weisser and Olivia Kipe went 2-for-3 with two hits. Weisser added one RBI while Kipe tallied four. Weiser also took the win in the circle, giving up four hits.
The Eagles return tomorrow evening when they travel to ODAC rival Roanoke College for a doubleheader nightcap. First game is set for a 5 p.m. start.
