Box Score 2 ROANOKE, Va. – The 2015 softball season came to an end for the Bridgewater College Eagles as the squad fell to ODAC rival Roanoke College in a doubleheader nightcap.
Although Roanoke won the opener, 1-0, both teams played tough defense against each other as neither squad allowed a run despite multiple opportunities.
The Maroons broke the scoreless game in the bottom of the fifth when Taylor Carter scored the only run of the game on a single by Taylor Sutherland. Even though Bridgewater managed to keep the Maroons from scoring again, the Eagles were unable to respond with a run of their own as Roanoke sealed the win.
Rayann Foltz went 1-for-2 at bat while Jen Balcom, Hannah Nyquist, and Brooke Throckmorton were 1-for-3. Hannah Trala took the loss in the circle, only giving up one run on four hits while striking out five batters and walking three.
Sutherland went 1-for-2 with one RBI for the Maroons while Carter was 1-for-3 with one run. Kelly Higbie earned her 12th win in the circle, giving up four hits and striking out one batter.
The Maroons were able to get out of the gate first in the second game as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first for an early 2-0 lead.
Although the Eagles weren't able to find a scoring opportunity in the next few innings, they were able to keep the Maroons from extending their lead. Finally, Bridgewater collected its first run of the game in the top of the fourth as Mariah Wharton singled to right field to bring home Throckmorton as the Eagles closed the gap, 2-1.
Roanoke responded in the bottom of the fifth with another run to pull ahead 3-1 but the Eagles came back to tie up the score in the top of the seventh as Cox doubled to left center, batting in Balcom and Nyquist.
The game seemed it may extend to an eighth inning as the Eagles quickly collected two outs, but the Maroons snuck in one more run for the final 4-3 tally.
Cox was 3-for-4 with two RBIs while Balcom and Throckmorton were both 1-for-3 with one run. Ryan Kirtner was 1-for-2 with one run.
Amanda Lutz pitched the loss, giving up nine hits on four runs while striking out three batters.
Ruthie Williams was 2-for-3 for the Maroon and tallied one RBI. Rhea Schleicher went 1-for-4 with one hit and two RBIs while Rachel Guilliams was 2-for-4 with one hit. Williams took the win in the circle, giving up nine hits on three runs while striking out eight batters and walking one.
The Eagles conclude their 2015 season with an 11-27 overall record and a 2-18 ODAC record.
