BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College volleyball team pushed undefeated Roanoke to the limit in a 3-2 (19-15, 25-21, 25-19, 17-25, 15-9) lost in its home opener at Nininger Hall on Tuesday evening.
The Eagles (2-7, 0-1 ODAC) got off to a quick start with a .257 hitting percentage to take the first set.
Sophomore middle hitter Carleigh Studtmann blasted a kill to give the Eagles the largest lead of the set, 16-12.
The Maroons (11-0, 2-0 ODAC) closed the gap to 21-19 following a service error, but the Eagles scored four straight points for the match lead.
In the second set, the Maroons jumped out to a 6-2 advantage. The Eagles responded with three unanswered points to come within three, 20-17, but a bad set from sophomore opposite Sarah Temple gave the Maroons the set point.
The Maroons offense heated up in the third frame by tallying 15 kills and a hitting percentage of .400 to win their second straight set.
However, the Eagles bounced back in the fourth period with their best offense of the match by racking up 14 kills and a hitting percentage of .375. The Eagles defense also clamped down to hold the Maroons to a hitting percentage of .075.
The fourth set went back and forth until a kill from Temple gave the Eagles a commanding lead, 21-14.
At the start of the fifth set, the Eagles looked poised for an upset victory by taking a 3-0 lead.
Nonetheless, the Maroons ignited a 13-0 run to put the match virtually out of reach.
As a team, the Eagles won the hitting battle .184 to .176, registered 65 digs, 54 kills, 49 assists, seven blocks.
Sophomore Rachel Kinsey powered the Eagles offense with 19 kills. Studtmann and Temple also notched 10 kills.
Freshman setter Jenna Hamra posted 42 assists, 10 digs and three service aces. Sophomore defensive specialist Macon Frey had 16 digs and two assist.
The Eagles remain at home for another conference showdown against Virginia Wesleyan on Friday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.
