Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Washington and Lee scored two goals in the final nine minutes of the first half Wednesday to open up a 3-0 lead and the Generals went on to defeat the Bridgewater College Eagles, 3-1, in ODAC women's soccer action.
W&L got on the board first with a goal in the 19th minute. Tricia Jessee sent a cross into the box from the right side and found the foot of Caroline Hahn who booted the ball into the back of the net from 12 yards out for a 1-0 Generals lead.
The Generals made it 2-0 in the 37th minute. Katie Pettit's through ball found Megan Engeland open behind the Eagles' defense and Engeland put the shot into an empty net for a 2-0 lead.
Engeland scored again with just seven seconds left in the first half to send the Generals to the break with a commanding 3-0 margin.
Bridgewater avoided the shutout in the 86th minute when Keri Rager floated a shot over the keeper's head from the right side and the ball bounced into the net, making the score 3-1. The goal was Rager's eighth of the season.
The Eagles kept the pressure on in the closing minutes and had a chance to make things interesting. With 1:04 left in the game, a pass across the box found Amber Sandy open at the back post. Sandy got a foot on the ball, but W&L keeper Addie Healy made a diving save to push the shot wide of the goal.
The Generals held a 16-11 advantage in shots and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Julia Baca led the Eagles with three shots while Rager put both of her shot attempts on goal. Eagles' keeper Hayley Talbott finished the contest with five saves while Healy recorded four saves for the Generals.
Bridgewater will look to get back on the winning track Saturday when the Eagles travel to Roanoke, Va., for a conference contest at Hollins University.
