BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Senior Allison Kirk converted the second half's only shot on goal to lead the Bridgewater College field hockey team past Frostburg State, 2-1 on Saturday at Jopson Field.
With 6:53 remaining Kirk's shot was blocked by a defender, but the Eagle forward followed up her own rebound and slipped it home for the game-winner.
The first half also started slow, and didn't feature a shot or corner until 10 minutes in. Taylor Prillaman was tripped up by Ashley Johnson, and on the ensuing penalty corner Elizabeth Washington redirected Prillaman's pass into the net to open the scoring.
Alenka Ferrufino had nearly gotten through the Bobcat defense minutes earlier, but Johnson was able to take the ball away at the last second.
Bridgewater's Caroline Fletcher controlled the backfield at the other end, making multiple key interceptions throughout the game to thwart potential FSU chances.
The Bobcats scored with 13:15 left in the first half, also off a penalty corner. Jacquelyn Nava played it short to Alexandra Darrow, who shot it past Hannah Rioux (three saves) for her 14th goal of the season.
Frostburg State's first shot of the game came 15 minutes in, with Rioux kicking away an attempt by Samantha Schaffer. On the penalty corner that followed, Rioux saved Johnson from outside and then denied Nava on the rebound.
Ferrufino dribbled around FSU goaltender Jackie Gover at the endline later in the first half, but Cara Morrell blocked the shot with her keeper out of the goal area.
Fletcher nearly scored in the final seconds of the first half, with Johnson making a tough defensive save on the goalline after Gover had only gotten a piece of Fletcher's shot.
Bridgewater (2-6) earned its second victory of the year and will begin ODAC play on Wednesday, at home vs. local rival Eastern Mennonite.
Frostburg State falls to 6-3 on the year. The Bobcats had been unbeaten in three games vs. ODAC competition coming into Saturday's matchup; Bridgewater's first eight non-conference opponents had a combined record of 16-9 heading into their games vs. the Eagles.
