Seniors Lead Eagles to Victory in ODAC Opener

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. –
Bridgewater seniors combined for all 14 points, including a milestone one, as the Eagles' field hockey team opened ODAC play with a 5-0 home victory over Eastern Mennonite.

Senior Taylor Prillaman, the school's second all-time leading scorer, tallied two goals and then recorded an assist for her 100th career point in an Eagle uniform.

That play came with 23:11 remaining as Prillaman made a nice controlling touch on Elizabeth Washington's pass and crossed to the middle, where classmate Allison Kirk forced it in for a 4-0 BC lead.

Seniors Rachael Loy (goal, two assists) and Alenka Ferrufino (goal, assist) were also on the scoresheet for Bridgewater.

Ferrufino opened the scoring in the eighth minute of play, redirecting a hard pass from Loy past the EMU goalkeeper.

Prillaman made it 2-0 later in the first half. Marisa Sims crossed the ball in from deep down the right side, and Prillaman converted on her second attempt to double the Eagle lead.

Prillaman had several hard slap shots in the first half that EMU's Kelsey Troyer (13 saves) did well to block away. Early on, Troyer saved a hard Prillaman shot and cleared a ricochet off her defender as well.

Troyer blocked another Prillaman slapper with 11 minutes left in the first half, and knocked away a rocket from Loy in the final seconds of the period.

Coming back onto the field after a green card midway through the first, Loy immediately got possession and flashed a shot across the goalmouth that Prillaman just missed connecting on. Loy then lifted a high shot just wide of the far post.

Bridgewater scored twice off penalty corners in the second half. After Troyer made a diving save to deny Ferrufino following an early second period corner, the Eagles earned another and Prillaman ripped it home off an assist from Loy.

The fifth goal came after the Eagles worked it around the arc on a corner, Fletcher to Prillaman to Strosser. An initial shot from Strosser was saved, with Ferrufino taking the rebound and feeding Loy for the final tally of the evening.

Prillaman nearly added another highlight-reel goal in the final minutes as she deflected a Ferrufino pass out of the air, but missed the upper right corner of the cage.

At the other end, BC goalie Amanda Harper earned the shutout and saved one of two EMU shots on frame. Defender Laura Gretz made a defensive save after Julie Burkhardt had slipped a shot under Harper in the second half.

Bridgewater (3-6, 1-0) starts off its ODAC campaign with a victory, and will travel to Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday. EMU falls to 2-7, 0-1 ODAC.
