SALEM, Va. – Rookie Rachel Gaston posted a career-best 12 kills to propel the Bridgewater College volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-13, 26-24, 25-21) sweep at Roanoke on Wednesday evening.
With the win, Bridgewater (19-8, 7-4 ODAC) remains fourth in the conference standing and is virtually a lock to host an ODAC tournament match.
Gaston hit .226 to lead the Eagles with double-digit kills and added three block assists. Allison Clark notched a .318 attack percentage on nine kills, and Carleigh Studtmann finished 8-for-16 at the net (.315) with only two errors to go along with a pair of service aces.
Jenna Hamra turned in a double-double effort behind 38 assists and 10 digs. Macon Frey recorded a match-high 20 digs and Taylor McNeely added 12 more.
Abby Mills collected seven kills and 16 digs, and Rachel Kinsey clubbed seven kills on 14 attempts and two errors (.357).
The Eagles played stout defense all night after accumulating 73 digs, which is their season-best in a three-set affair.
In the first set, BC hit .300 with 12 kills on 30 attempts and only three errors to claim the period by a double-digit margin.
The second set was neck-and-neck as Hamra fed Studtmann to tie the frame, 7-all. A Gaston kill knotted the period again at 24-24, and then Mills recorded a service ace to force a Roanoke (17-8, 5-6 ODAC) timeout. Out of the break, Gaston smashed another kill to close the tight game.
Late in the third set, Clark infiltrated the Maroons' defense to lift the Eagles to a 21-18 edge. Kinsey scored match-point on a spike and Gaston followed with another kill for the key conference triumph.
The Eagles, who rank seventh in the NCAA South Region, will wrap up the regular season on the road with non-conference matchups against William Peace (11:00 a.m.) and Bob Jones (1:00 p.m.) in a tri-match on Saturday.
