Staten Island Turns Back Eagles, 71-57

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Bridgewater College was unable to overcome a cold-shooting performance Thursday evening as the Eagles fell to the College of Staten Island, 71-57, in the opening round of the 15th Annual Tournament of Heroes.

Bridgewater (5-5) will play Friday in the consolation game against No. 18 Illinois Wesleyan. Middlebury upset Illinois Wesleyan, 77-75, on a last-second jumper in Thursday's other contest.

The Eagles shot 33 percent from the field, making just 20-of-59 shots, against the Dolphins. Bridgewater connected on just 3-of-18 shots from 3-point range and made less than 50 percent from the foul line, hitting 14-of-29 shots.

Bryce Boggs scored the first points of the game for Bridgewater's lone lead. The Dolphins then reeled off a 12-2 run to lead 12-4.

Staten Island opened up a 13-point advantage, 25-12, on a 3-pointer by Vincent Dacunto with 7:36 left in the first half.

The Eagles then put together their best stretch of the half as a 14-4 run sliced the Dolphins' lead to 29-26.

Bridgewater got the margin back into single digits when Kevin Saylor and Boggs scored from in close, trimming the margin to 26-18. A free throw by Keonte Dennis and another bucket by Saylor whittled the margin down to five, 26-21, before a free throw by Staten Island's Christian Taylor made the score 27-21.

Efe Balfour then worked the paint and converted a three-point play to pull the Eagles within three, 27-24 with 2:56 left in the half. Khaleeq Baum hit two free throws for the Dolphins but Davrion Grier scored for the Eagles to keep the deficit at three, 29-26.

The Dolphins, however, closed the half with a 6-0 spurt to lead by nine, 35-26, at the break.

Frank Schettino opened the second half with a jumper for the host team, but Saylor answered with a dunk to keep the margin at nine. Baum hit two free throws and Schettino added one at the line to push the margin to 12, but a 3-pointer by Jesse Case once again cut the Staten Island lead baqck to nine, 40-31.

The Eagles continued to chip away at the defict. A layup by Saylor cut the margin to seven and a 3-pointer by Essex Thompson made it a six-point game, 44-38, with 13:45 left.

After two free throws by Baum, Bridgewater's Phil Baumgartner converted a three-point play to move the Eagles to within five, 46-41, with 12:45 remaining.

A bucket by Saylor kept the margin at five, but a 9-0 run by the Dolphims made the score 57-43, with 9:03 left to play.

The Dolphins led by double digits the rest of the way and closed out the 71-57 victory.

Saylor led the Eagles with 14 points and Boggs added 11. Boggs also pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Eagles to a 43-41 edge on the glass. Staten Island's Baum led all scorers with 19 points.
