BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College snapped a four-game losing streak with a 66-49 victory Wednesday evening over Shenandoah University at Nininger Hall.
Eagles' sophomore Logan Seacrist had a career night, hitting 9-of-11 shots from 3-point range and finishing with 35 points. Seacrist also led the Eagles to a 38-31 advantage on the glass as he pulled down 11 rebounds.
Shenandoah (5-19, 2-13 in the ODAC) made just one bucket in the first eight minutes of the game as the Eagles took an early 7-2 lead.
Despite the slow start, the Hornets overtook the Eagles with 8:58 left in the first half when Aaron Patterson stroked a 3-pointer to give the visitors a 12-10 lead. Thomas Walker scored from inside to put the Hornets up by four, but Seacrist knocked down back-to-back threes for a 16-14 Eagles lead with 6:22 left in the half.
Shenandoah regained the lead on buckets by Kelsey Thomas and EJ Baltimore, but Seacrist tallied again from long range, giving the Eagles a 19-18 lead with 3:27 on the clock.
Keonte Dennis and Efe Balfour both scored from in close to push the Bridgewater advantage to 23-18. Malcolm Clark worked the baseline to score for the Hornets before Seacrist made his fifth 3-pointer of the first half to give the Eagles a 26-20 lead at the break.
Shenandoah tied the score at 31-31 on a jumper by Antwan Pittman with 14:36 left in the game, but the Eagles then took control with a 13-0 run over the next four minutes.
Seacrist broke the tie with a 3-pointer and Balfour added two free throws, putting the Eagles on top 36-31. Seacrist scored the next eight points on a pair of 3-pointers and two free throws, giving Bridgewater a 44-31 lead with 11:05 remaining.
Gabriel Gonzalez hit 1-of-2 foul shots to snap the Hornets drought, but point guard Romello Crowell drove the lane and converted a three-point play for a 15-point, 47-32, lead with 9:18 left.
The Hornets scored the next seven points to pull within eight, but another Eagles spurt, this one an 8-0 flurry opened the margin to 16 points with 3:27 remaining.
Balfour hit two foul shots and Seacrist hit another 3-ball, making the score 52-39. Two foul shots by Crowell and 1-of-2 from the foul line by Balfour put the Eagles up 55-39.
Balfour also turned in a solid effort for the Eagles, finishing with 13 points and eight rebounds. Crowell had a strong floor game as he dished out five assists and turned the ball over just once in 33 minutes.
Bridgewater shot 46.3 percent from the floor, making 19-of-41 shots. The Eagles made 11-of-21 from beyond the arc for 52.4 percent. The Eagles also cashed in at the foul line, hitting 17-of-19 free throws for 89.5 percent.
Clark paced the Hornets with 14 points and Patterson added 12. Shenandoah shot just 25.7 percent from the floor in the first half and finished the game 20-of-61 for 32.8 percent.
Bridgewater (7-16, 6-9 in the ODAC) closes out its regular season on the road Saturday afternoon with a trip to Hampden-Sydney College. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
The Eagles took the first matchup from the Tigers, 70-55, and a win Saturday could put the Eagles in line for a first-round home game in the ODAC tournament.
