Eagles Fall To Hampden-Sydney In Regular Season Finale

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Bridgewater College scored just 13 points on 4-of-21 shooting in the first half Saturday afternoon as the Eagles closed out the regular season with a 76-34 loss to Hampden-Sydney College.

With the loss, Bridgewater closed out the regular season with a 7-17 overall record and a 6-10 mark in the ODAC. The Eagles finished in a tie for ninth place in the conference standings with Eastern Mennonite. Bridgewater won the tiebreaker to receive the No. 9 seed and as a result earned a return trip to Hampden-Sydney on Tuesday evening for a first-round tournament matchup with the Tigers. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.

Hampden-Sydney (16-9, 8-8 in the ODAC) fell to the Eagles 70-55 at Nininger Hall earlier this season, but Saturday's contest was controlled by the Tigers from the opening tip.

The hosts jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the first five minutes and continued to build its advantage during the remainder of the half.

Bridgewater scored first on a layup by Efe Balfour, but a 3-pointer by Javonte Reddick put the Tigers ahead to stay. Guilherme Guimaraes scored from in close and Mike Murray knocked down a 3-pointer, giving the Tigers an 8-2 lead. Layups by Nick Chase and Murray pushed the margin to 12-2 with 15:05 left in the first half.

Logan Seacrist hit from long-range to cut the deficit to 12-5, but Jake Duncan answered with a 3-pointer for the Tigers to push the margin back to 10 points. After Jesse Case made 1-of-2 at the foul line for the Eagles, Duncan hit again from beyond the arc, making the score 18-6. Balfour hit a short jumper for the Eagles before the Tigers reeled off an 8-0 spurt to lead 26-8 with 10:57 still left in the half.

Bridgewater managed to score just five points during the remainder of the half as the Tigers opened up a comfortable 43-13 lead at the break.

Seacrist was the lone Bridgewater player to reach double figures as he finished with 11 points. Duncan scored 15 points, all from 3-point range to lead Hampden-Sydney as 15 different players broke into the scoring column for the Tigers.

The Tigers dominated the boards by a 40-27 margin. Keonte Dennis pulled down seven rebounds for the Eagles while Mitch Owens and Josh Katowitz each grabbed five for the Tigers.

After the 19 percent shooting effort in the first half, the Eagles made 7-of-22 shots in the final 20 minutes to finish 11-of-43 for 25.6 percent. The Tigers hit 29-of-57 of its shots for 50.9 percent. Hampden-Sydney was red-hot from 3-point range, making 12-of-23 attempts for 53.2 percent.
