Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Guilford College took advantage of a cold-shooting first half Sunday by the Bridgewater College Eagles to open up a big lead and the Quakers went on to post an 86-56 victory in ODAC action.
The Eagles made just 16 percent from the floor in the first half, connecting on only 4-of-25 shots.
Bridgewater (6-14, 5-7 in the ODAC) allowed just two buckets by the Quakers in the first five minutes and led by a score of 8-4.
Carson Long scored on Guilford's first possession of the game, but Maalik Howard knocked down a 3-pointer from the top of the key to put the Eagles on top 3-2.
Both teams struggled to make shots early as neither team scored from the field during the next three minutes.
Trenton Ray hit two foul shots for a 5-2 Bridgewater lead before Guilford got back on the board on a layup by Will Freeman to trail 5-4 at the 15:47 mark.
DJ Caldwell hit a long 3-pointer to put the Eagles up 8-4, but the Quakers reeled off the next seven points to take the lead for good.
Trevor Hyatt and Austin Thompson scored from in close to tie the score and a 3-pointer from Hyatt gave Guilford an 11-8 lead with 12:55 left in the opening half.
Efe Balfour hit 1-of-2 at the line for BC before Guilford began to expand its lead with a 6-0 spurt. Hyatt scored again from in close and Justen Best drove the lane for a layup for a 15-9 Quakers lead. Long added a layup in traffic to push the margin to 17-9 with 9:57 left.
A 3-pointer by Keonte Dennis pulled the Eagles to within five, but a Bridgewater scoreless drought lasting more than five minutes followed as the Quakers took control.
Leading 17-12, the Quakers reeled off 14 straight points to lead 31-12 with 4:07 left in the half. Thompson sparked the run with eight points.
A 3-pointer by Bridgewater's Brandon Walters cut Guilford's lead to 35-16, but the Quakers scored the final six points of the half to lead 41-16 at the break.
Ray was the lone Bridgewater player in double figures with 11 points. Thompson led five Quakers in double figures with 14 points. Guilford received 42 points from its bench in the victory.
Guilford (13-8, 8-4 in the ODAC) owned the glass by a 47-34 margin. Balfour paced the Eagles with 10 rebounds.
Bridgewater returns to action Wednesday evening when the Eagles host rival Eastern Mennonite. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
