Eagles Drop Non-Conference Doubleheader at Mary Baldwin

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

STAUNTON, Va. - The Bridgewater College softball team was outlasted by Mary Baldwin 10-9 (eight innings) and 2-1 on the road Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader.

The doubleheader marked the Eagles eighth game in a span of six days.

Game 1: Mary Baldwin 10, Bridgewater 9 (eight innings)

The Fighting Squirrels (6-10) opened the first game with a three-run homer from Kayla Wheeler in the bottom of the first. Sarah Seekins hit an RBI single to right field and Wheeler knocked a RBI double to left field in the second inning to take a 5-1 advantage.

Bridgewater (3-11) responded with three runs in the third inning. Victoria Gontarz drew a walk on the second at bat and Lindsey Talley followed up with a bunt single. Hannah Nyquist reached first base on a Mary Baldwin error, which allowed Talley and Gontarz to score.

Nyquist advanced all the way to third on the previous error and reached home after an error by Chrissy Cromer to close the gap, 5-4.

The Eagles claimed the lead with two runs in the fourth inning and Brooke Throckmorton blasted a two-run homer to left field in the fifth for an 8-5 advantage.

Nonetheless, the Squirrels tied the game with three straight RBI singles in the bottom of the sixth, and both teams went scoreless in the seventh to force extra innings.

College softball uses the international play rule for extra innings, which allows each team to begin its half of the inning with a runner on second base.

Carlita Tibbs was placed on second at the top of the eighth, advanced to third on a single by Mikalia Guard and was batted in after Talley singled to second base.

However, the Squirrels retaliated in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single to left field and the game clinching run on a ground out to third base.

Talley notched two hits and three RBI, while Throckmorton and Nyquist both posted two RBI.

Game 2: Mary Baldwin 2, Bridgewater 1

Mary Baldwin took the early advantage again in game two of the doubleheader thanks to a RBI single to right field by Morgan Tully.

For the rest of the game, both starting pitchers tossed solid inning to keep runs off the scoreboard. Tully led off for Mary Baldwin with a single to left field, advanced on a throw and reached third base on a ground out. With two outs, Alli Bascunan plated Tully with a single to center field.

Bridgewater attempted to rally in the seventh with two outs as Lacey Shifflett singled to center field to plate Throckmorton. However, Allison Patrick grounded out to the pitcher on the next at bat to close the contest.

As a team, Bridgewater tallied five hits and finished the game without errors. Carolyn Campbell pitched six innings for the Eagles, recording two strikeouts and allowing nine hits for two runs.

The Eagles are back in action on Saturday, March 19 against nationally-ranked Christopher Newport at 2:00 p.m.
