BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Senior Brianna Cox combined for seven hits, nine RBI, four runs and a home run to lead the Bridgewater College Eagles to a doubleheader sweep over Southern Virginia, 7-0 and 17-0 (five innings,) in their final home game at Fulk Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Senior Brooke Throckmorton also totaled two hits, three runs and an RBI during her last performance on the Bridgewater campus.
Game one: Bridgewater 7, Southern Virginia 0
Cox and freshman Carolyn Campbell combined to shutout Southern Virginia (7-31) on three hits, and the Eagles' offense produced 10 hits to win game one.
The Eagles (9-27) got off to a quick start with a five-run inning in the first. Back-to-back hit by pitches with the bases loaded scored the first two runs. Freshman Emily Parks followed up with a two-RBI double to left center and sophomore Jessica Dawson hit an RBI single through the left side.
The Eagles had an opportunity to increase its scoring advantage in the bottom second. With one out, Nyquist and Cox singled to put runners on base. After Throckmorton struck out, both runners advanced on a wild pitch, but freshman Mikalia Guard grounded to third base for the final out.
The Knights threatened to score by loading the bases with only one out in the top of the fourth. However, Madisen Muse popped up to third base and Katierose Helems grounded out to first base to end the inning.
Bridgewater added to its lead in bottom of the fourth. Freshman Lindsey Talley led off with a single to shortstop and reached home on a double from Cox.
The Eagles cushioned their lead in the sixth with an RBI double from Cox, and the Knights went down in order during the seventh to close the contest.
Nyquist finished game one 3-for-4 with one run and Parks drove in two runs.
Game two: Bridgewater 17, Southern Virginia 0 (five innings)
The Eagles' offense caught fire by manufacturing 19 hits, and Campbell shutout the Knights on two strikeouts and four hits to complete to sweep.
In the first inning, Cox smashed a two-RBI double down the left field line and crossed home plate on error to give the Eagles a 3-0 advantage.
The Eagles erupted with six runs on six hits in the bottom of the second. With the bases loaded, Cox plated Talley and Gontarz on single to center field. Throckmorton knocked an RBI single through the left side on the next at bat, and Guard hit an RBI single up the middle.
Throckmorton scored on a grounder, and sophomore Ryan Kirtner hit another single through the left side to bring home Guard.
The Eagles offense wouldn't cool down as Cox scored sophomore Mariah Wharton from second base on a single up the middle. Throckmorton singled to center field on the next at bat, and a grounder advanced both Cox and Throckmorton. Junior Lacey Shifflett then plated Cox and Throckmorton with a single up the middle.
In the fourth inning, Bridgewater added five more runs on seven hits. With one out, Gontarz singled and then scored after Talley tripled to center field. Dawson followed up with an RBI single and Cox ended her afternoon on a high note by blasting a two-run homer.
Gontarz was 3-for-4 with three runs and Talley finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs, one RBI and two stolen bases. Guard had two hits, two runs and an RBI, while Shifflett posted two hits and two RBI.
The Eagles close out the 2016 season on the road against ODAC rival Guilford on Saturday with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m.
