HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Bridgewater College men's golf team previewed a deep and balanced roster for the 2016-17 season, as the Eagles played their first round of the year in the Tom Kinder Memorial.
All eight Eagles who played shot under 80 and, on a roster of nine players, seven shot 77 or better to open the season.
Bridgewater shot 292 as a team and sits in third place behind Ferrum (284) and Hampden-Sydney (285). The Eagles' four worst scores out of eight players (including those competing as individuals) still would have placed in the top half of the 17-team field.
Ferrum's 284 also tied the all-time Kinder Memorial tournament record that was set last September by Bridgewater. Ferrum had held the previous mark of 287.
Jeremy Pannebaker led the Eagles with a 69, which is tied for third overall. He had four birdies on the day (#1, #11, #14, #16) to just one bogey.
Luke Hill carded a 73 (T-12 overall) and was 2-under through 12 holes after three birdies on the front-nine and another on the par-5 11th.
Michael Gruver and Ocean Armstrong each shot a 75 for Bridgewater. Gruver had five birdies, including the par-5 3rd hole where his eagle putt just lipped out. Armstrong had three birdies of his own.
Ronald Uszenski led an outstanding group of individuals for Bridgewater, shooting 73 to tie for 12th place overall. He had three birdies on the front nine and four overall.
Also playing as individuals were Jake Norby (76) and Mark Corella (77). Norby birdied three par-fours during his round. Eugene Dillon rounded out Bridgewater's group with a 79, including a birdie on #9.
The tournament will conclude tomorrow at Lakeview Golf Course with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
