WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Bridgewater College men's golf team was led by Walker Gillespie's impressive first round score at even par to take a second-place result among 60 golfers at the Melee Sunday afternoon.
In the team scores, the Eagles hold second place in a field of 11 teams with a solid +8 (292). Christopher Newport currently has sole possession of first, topping the leaderboard at just three strokes better than the Crimson & Gold.
Sophomore Walker Gillespie shined in the first round of scoring action. Gillespie impressed the field on hole 14 with a birdie on a par-3 and then on hole 16 kept up with another birdie for an even par 71.
Senior Brandon Washburn got through the first 18 holes of scoring action to land a top-10 finish. Washburn carded four total birdies and nailed a +2 (73) on the day.
Freshman Jayden Hendricks pulled in a solid finish as well for the Eagles to take a top-15 finish. Hendricks squared up numerous par holes and dropped in a birdie on hole 11 for a 74 first round score. Cai Clark also shared the same result as Hendricks for 12th and a 74.
Freshman Jackson Baugher placed 26th after the first 18 holes and carded a 76 to round out the day for the Eagles.
The Eagles will return tomorrow, Oct. 20 for the final day of competition at the Melee hosted by Premier Collegiate Tournaments.
