ALTOONA, Pa. - The Bridgewater College men's golf team was back in action today for the second round of the Sinking Valley Intercollegiate in Altoona, Pa. The Eagles finished in second place out of 20 teams with a two-day score of 609.
The men used a 302 second-day score to boost three spots up from the first round which was the best second day score at the tournament.
Senior Brandon Washburn led the team today, carding a 74 to finish fourth in a field of 106 golfers. This marks Washburn's third consecutive top-five finish in the first three events of the year.
"Even when we're not at our best it was still great to see the guys compete and get a 2nd place finish," said head coach Nick Schlickenrieder. "It shows how much talent we have on our roster and it's not going to be the last time we will be competing for wins this season."
Junior Jayden Hendricks was the second scorer for the Eagles after two rounds of golf, shooting a 75 and finishing in a tie for seventh. After some rough holes in the first round, Hendricks bounced back in the second round with strong tee balls.
Sophomore Cai Clark came in with a 76 on Monday which put him in a tie for seventh with teammate Jayden Hendricks. Clark kept up his short game effectively and landed a satisfying performance on his first road trip with the team.
Sophomore Walker Gillespie and senior Andrew Baugher both came in with a 77 for the second round. Gillespie finished 25th and Baugher came in 31st.
Playing as an individual, freshman Jackson Baugher finished third in his first collegiate road trip. Baugher shot a 76 in the second round to bring home an impressive finish. The first year hit successful putts throughout the two-day tournament which helped him stand out amongst the competition.
Overall, Franklin & Marshall won the event with total of 602 and Caden Perkins of Mount St. Joseph was the medalist with a score of 146.
The men will return for The Melee on Oct. 18-20 in Williamsburg, Va.
