Eagles Sweep Hornets, First to Two ODAC Victories

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College volleyball team opened its home schedule with another important ODAC victory, sweeping Shenandoah 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-15) on Friday.

After missing the conference playoffs by one spot in each of the past two seasons, the Eagles have kicked off conference play by beating two of teams in front of them in each of those years (Lynchburg and Shenandoah), and are currently the only ODAC team at 2-0 in 2016.

Freshman Madison Haynes had six total blocks, spearheading an important blocking stretch in the second game that helped the Eagles pull away. She also had four kills on just six attempts (.667).

Setter Jenna Hamra had 24 assists, three service aces, and also hit for a high percentage in her limited attack attempts with three kills on four hits (.750). Senior Abby Mills led the Eagles with 10 kills.

The Eagles recorded blocks on four of their final eight points in the second game, with the Hornets within three at the start of the run. Haynes was involved with all four.

A block assist by Haynes and Hamra made it 18-14 Eagles, and Carleigh Studtmann followed with a service ace as part of a 5-0 run. Haynes recorded a block solo on the next point.

The second set ended with consecutive blocks by Haynes and Victoria Wilson, both on Elizabeth Lamont (who had a team-best eight kills for the Hornets).

The third game was tied 7-7 after a service ace by SU's Regina Bumper, but a Hamra kill put the Eagles ahead for good. Sydney McTigue's ace made it 17-13 and Hamra's kill continued a four-point run after the Hornets had inched back to within a point.

The Eagles hit .231 as a team with just 10 attack errors and made seven total blocks compared to Shenandoah's -.026 hitting percentage on 31 errors, with a pair of blocks.

The Eagles improve to 8-2, 2-0 and will host a tri-match tomorrow that includes Meredith and ODAC opponent Washington & Lee.
