BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College was tied with Guilford College, 42-42, midway through the second half Saturday at Nininger Hall, but the Quakers scored the next eight points to take a 50-42 advantage and fought off the Eagles down the stretch to close out a 63-57 ODAC victory.
Points were hard to come by in an opening half dominated by defense. The two teams combined to make just 15 field goals while combining to turn the ball over 24 times.
The Quakers led 14-5 midway through the first half as the Eagles were unable to get untracked at the offensive end.
A 3-pointer by Davrion Grier then jump-started a 10-0 Eagles run to put the hosts up by a point. After Grier's 3-ball, Paul Brown hit from long range and then added two free throws to pull the Eagles to within a point, 14-13. After the teams traded empty possessions, Brown drove the baseline and converted a layup in traffic to give the Eagles a 15-14 lead with 5:33 left in the half.
Two foul shots by Carson Long swung the advantage back to the Quakers, but Brown continued his personal flurry by knocking down a 15-footer for a 16-15 Eagles' lead. An offensive foul against Guilford gave possession back to Bridgewater and big man Efe Balfour powered inside for a bucket, giving the Eagles a 19-16 advantage at the 4:32 mark.
Two foul shots by Bryce Boggs pushed the BC margin to five points before two free throws by Dominique Henderson and a layup by Long trimmed the BC lead down to a single point.
A jumper by Kenneth Turner gave the Eagles a three-point lead, but Jaylen Gore scored on a jumper to pull the Quakers to within 23-22 with 2:09 left in the half.
Both teams went scoreless the remainder of the half as the Eagles left the court with the one-point lead.
Senior guard Tim Dougan knocked down a 3-pointer to open the second-half scoring, but the Quakers responded with six straight points to lead 28-26.
Two buckets by Balfour switched the lead back to the Eagles before a layup by Long knotted the score at 30-30.
Turner hit a long 3-pointer for a 33-30 lead before Guilford Alston Thompson and Balfour traded hoops, keeping the Eagles' advantage at three, 35-32.
A layup by Turner put the Eagles up by five, 37-32, with 15 minutes left, but the Quakers rallied with eight straight points to lead 40-37.
Balfour continued to work the paint for the Eagles and his three-point play tied the score at 40-40. Guilford's Marcus Curry and Bridgewater's Keonte Dennis then traded inside buckets to keep the score tied, 42-42, with 10:14 left.
Guilford then reeled off the key 8-0 spurt to take the lead for good, 50-42, with 6:36 remaining. The Quakers led the rest of the way, but they were unable to shake completely clear of the Eagles in the closing minutes.
Bridgewater responded to the 8-0 spurt with a layup by Balfour and 3-pointer from Turner to trim the margin to three, 50-47. The margin stayed at three as Curry and Brown exchanged buckets, making the score 52-49 at the 5:10 mark.
A driving layup by Eagles' guard Kevin Saylor made it a one-point game before a layup by Thompson and a 3-pointer by Zachary Houston pushed the Quakers to a 57-51 lead with 1:41 left.
Another layup by Saylor with 1:07 left pulled the Eagles to within three points, 58-55, but Guilford hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute to hold on for the 63-57 victory.
Freshman guards Turner and Brown came off the Eagles bench and turned in strong performances to help lead the offense. Turner hit 3-of-5 shots from 3-point range to finish with 13 points and Brown added 11 as the duo combined to make 9-of-13 shots from the field. Balfour provided the inside game as he made 6-of-9 shots to finish with 13 points.
Curry scored 10 points to lead a balanced Quakers' attack as six different players scored at least seven points.
Bridgewater finishes the regular season with a 6-19 overall record and 3-13 mark in the ODAC. The Quakers enter the upcoming conference tournament at the No. 1 seed with a 20-5 overall record and a 13-3 mark in conference play.
