BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College let two 4-0 leads get away from them in Wednesday's doubleheader with Shenandoah. The Eagles would fall 5-4 in eight innings in game one and 6-4 in six innings as the second contest was called because of nightfall.
In game one the Eagles had plenty of chances to score against Katherine Seidl, as they left the bases loaded three times in the first contest of the day.
Bridgewater would surge out to a 4-0 advantage after two innings of play. RBI singles by Anna Patterson and Lacey Shifflett in the first, and a Victoria Gontarz RBI double in the second started the scoring, and as Mikalia Guard was caught stealing second, Gontarz sprinted home for a fourth run.
The Hornets would chip into the Eagles lead in the top of the third inning as Casey Webb and Janae Hester scored on a Makaela Dawkins two-out single to center.
Shenandoah would strike back in the sixth inning. Dawkins and Lindsay Corbin led off the inning with singles. Haley Koeninger would bring them both home, with an RBI double to left center to knot the score at four.
Bridgewater's best chance at victory would come in the bottom half of the sixth. The Eagles would load the baes only to come up empty as Stephanie Carroll would fly out to center to end the inning, and leave the bases loaded for the third and final time in the contest.
Shenandoah would score the winning run of the contest in the eighth inning as Corbin singled to right field, bringing Breanne Smith home.
Game two would start out in a similar way, as the Eagles crossed home plate four times in the first inning. Lacey Shifflett singled through the left side to bring Patterson and Guard home. Katie Merhout would double to right center one batter later, bringing Carlita Tibbs and Shifflett home for the 4-0 lead.
It would be all Shenandoah the rest of the way. The Hornets would load the bases with the first three batters of the second inning; Hester scored on a misplayed fly ball followed by a Webb single to right that brought Kristen Weadon home, cutting the Eagles' lead to two.
In the next frame for the Hornets, they would add four more runs- one from a Koeninger RBI double, two from a Weadon RBI single, and the last run from a Webb RBI single to center.
The Eagles' best opportunity to score came in the bottom of the fourth as Jessica Dawson and Talley would reach on errors. Gontarz singled to left, advancing Dawson and Talley. The next batter, Guard, would line out to short and Gontarz would be thrown out at first trying to scramble back to the base. Patterson ended the inning on a popup to short.
The Eagles fall to 5-13 on the year and 0-2 in ODAC play. Bridgewater returns to action Saturday as the Eagles visit Sweet Briar in an ODAC doubleheader. The first game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
