BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College defeated Southern Virginia, 8-1, Thursday in a non-conference women's tennis match played on Mapp Courts.
The Eagles got on the board first when Jamiah Lewis and Shannon Quinn blanked Micah Morse and Kari Stollenwerk, 8-0 to win at No. 2 doubles. Stephanie Barton and Whitney Cash put the Eagles on top 2-0 when they held off Makaela Adamson and Kelly Worthington at No. 3 doubles by a score of 8-4.
The Knights picked up their lone point of the day at No. 1 doubles where Lauren Morrison and Natalie Teets slipped past the Eagles' Whitney Kiser and Nicole Shifflett, 8-6.
The Eagles swept the six singles matches to close out the victory.
Kiser defeated Stollenwerk 6-0-6-2 to win at No. 2 while Barton stopped Teets at No. 4 singles 6-4, 6-1. Shifflett claimed the clinching point at No. 3 singles with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Morse.
Cash defeated Adamson at No. 5 singles 6-3, 6-2 and Quinn turned back Worthington to win 7-5, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
The closest match came at the top of the ladder and was the last match off the courts as Bridgewater's Lewis edged Morrison in three sets. The two split the first two sets by indentical 7-5 scores. A tiebreaker was played to determine the winner with Lewis prevailing 10-7.
