CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - The Bridgewater College men's golf team carded a strong 306 on the more difficult of two courses, in the opening round of the 46th Annual Marine Corps Intercollegiate.
Over the first two rounds, teams will play once each on the par-70 Scarlet short course and the more difficult par-72 Gold course. The top 16 teams will play for the championship Sunday on the Gold course while the bottom half will close out on the Scarlet.
Last season, Bridgewater shot 318 (12 strokes lower than today's score) on the Gold course and ultimately missed the championship round by just eight strokes.
Ocean Armstrong led the Eagles with an 73. Ronald Uszenski shot 76, one stroke ahead of teammate Luke Hill (77).
Also competing for the Eagles were Jeremy Pannebaker (80) and Michael Gruver (83).
The Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate Golf Championship is a 54-hole event conducted at Paradise Point Golf Course each year, usually during the last weekend of March.
The event was first held in 1972. Its purpose, in part, was to expose young college students to the military environment and conduct an event to foster interaction between the college and the active duty and retired Marines in the Camp Lejeune area.
