FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Bridgewater senior Anna Sobus recorded the first hat trick of her career Sunday afternoon to lead the Eagles to a 5-2 victory over Methodist. Sobus also added an assist and fellow senior Keri Rager added two goals and one assist in Bridgewater's biggest offensive display of the season.
The victory is the fifth straight for the Eagles, now 5-1-1 overall.
The teams played to a 1-1 tie in the first half before the Eagles' attack took over in the second half.
Rager put the Eagles on the board less than two minutes into the game. Sobus played Rager into the box and Rager beat the keeper one-on-one to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead just 1:59 in.
The Monarchs responded in the 11th minute when Aiden Sherry scored off an assist from Capri Clark to tie the score at 1-1.
Bridgewater hit the Monarchs with a three-goal barrage in the first 11 minutes of the second half to gain control.
Sobus scored the first of her three goals just 1:17 into the second half when she was alone in the box and played the ball of the keeper to put the Eagles on top 2-1.
Bridgewater scored again in the 53rd minute. The Monarchs were called for a foul near midfield and Eagles defender Sarah Brennan played the free kick quickly. She played a long ball over the defenders and Sobus finished for her second goal, making the score 3-1.
Less than five minutes later, the Eagles struck again. Morgan Todd put a shot on goal and the shot hit the post. Rager cleaned up the rebound for her second goal of the game, giving the Eagles a 4-1 cushion.
The Monarchs scored in the 62nd minute off a set piece. Haley Bowles took a corner kick for Methodist and Kaylee Kraus scored on a header from 7 yards out to trim the margin to 4-2.
Bridgewater added its final goal late in the game when Sobus took a long ball from Grayson Mathews and moved around the keeper for an open shot to finish off her hat trick.
Bridgewater finished with a 23-14 advantage in shots, including a 13-6 margin in the second half. Methodist held the edge in corner kicks, 7-5.
Hayley Talbott finished the game with five saves for the Eagles. One of the saves came on a penalty kick, making the Eagles 3-for-3 in defending PKs this season.
The Eagles return to acton Wednesday when they host fival Eastern Mennonite. Due to the unbalanced conference schedule being used this season, the contest will not count in the ODAC standings.
