Volleyball Wins Hard-Fought Match Against Guilford

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Bridgewater College Volleyball team earned a hard-fought win Saturday afternoon against ODAC rival Guilford. It was the third five set match Bridgewater has won this season and the Eagles were able to come up with the win by a final score of 3-2 (25-21, 21-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-11).

Both teams battled back-and-fourth the entire match, but the Eagles were able to pull off the big kills in the fifth set to secure a victory.

Sophomore outside hitter Rachel Gaston continued her recent success, leading the team in kills for the match with 17. Junior Deja Booker added her own 12 kills and Victoria Wilson had herself a strong game with a season-high 48 assists. Senior libero Macon Frey was spectacular with a match-best 37 digs. She also served up five of Bridgewater's 10 aces. Senior Carleigh Studtmann also hit .444 in the match and notched eight blocks.

For Guilford, Christian Ritter tallied 16 kills to go along with 19 digs.

In the first set, the Eagles rode out the serve of Frey, who had two key service aces at the end of the set to give Bridgewater a 20-12 lead. Guilford made it close but weren't able to come back with back-to-back errors to lose the set.

The second set was back-and-fourth for most of the time until Guilford went on a 4-0 rally at the end to secure them the win.

Bridgewater came back strong in the third set, taking an early 9-1 lead on four Guilford errors. Guilford came all the way back to tie it at 20 a piece until Booker came through big with 2 kills at the end of the set to give the Eagles the set win.

The fifth set was even again until multiple attack errors by Guilford and a final kill by Studtmann gave Bridgewater the hard-fought victory.

Bridgewater now stands 12-3 on the year and 3-1 in ODAC play. The team returns home for another ODAC contest against Washington and Lee on Wednesday, Sept. 27, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
