Volleyball Drops 3-1 Decision to Washington and Lee

BRIDGEWATER, VA- The Bridgewater College Volleyball team dropped its third home loss of the season to ODAC opponent Washington and Lee Wednesday evening by a score of 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 23-25, 14-25). 

The two teams battled through the first three sets, however Washington and Lee pulled away in the last set with a double-digit win. 

Deja Booker and Madison Haynes led the charge for Bridgewater. Booker had 11 kills while Haynes had ten. Victoria Wilson continued her recent success with 37 assists and eight digs. Macon Frey was solid again defensively with 19 digs. Taylor McNeely added 14 digs of her own and Allison Clark had six kills to go along with ten digs. Carleigh Studtmann chipped in 3 block assists on the night and one solo block. 

For Washington and Lee, Meg Guignon was a force with 15 kills and 17 digs, Brynne Gould also had 11 kills with 12 digs. 

The Generals got off to a strong start in the first set, jumping out to an early 5-0 lead on three errors by the Eagles and a service ace by Elena West. Bridgewater battled all the way back however, cutting a 10-2 deficit to tie it up at 13 on a block by Haynes and Booker. Washington and Lee regained the lead for some time, but Bridgewater tied it up again at 21 on a block by Studtmann, but were unable to grab a lead and eventually lost the set.

The second set was back-and-fourth until Bridgewater began to pull away with a 20-12 lead. Washington and Lee didn't go down without a fight however, and scored three straight at points at the end of the set to make the score 24-20. However, the Eagles shut it down on a kill by Clark and won the set. 

Washington and Lee went on a 8-0 rally during the third set to take a 22-12 advantage. The Eagles came back with a 7-0 rally of their own later in the set to make it 22-19, but came up just short, losing the set by a tight margin of 25-23. 

The Generals took their biggest lead of the match in the fourth set, scoring seven of the last eight points to win the match. 

Bridgewater looks to rebound and grab their first home win of the season when they take on Randolph on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 1:00 p.m.
