Eagles Sweep Randolph WildCats

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College picked up its first victory this season in Nininger Hall as the Eagles swept past the Randolph College WildCats 25-15, 25-12, 25-19 Saturday afternoon in ODAC action.

Bridgewater jumped out to a 10-5 advantage in the first set and extended the margin to 15-8 on kills by Carleigh Studtmann and Rachel Gaston and a service ace by Victoria Wilson.

The Eagles maintained the upper hand and a kill by Allison Clark pushed the margin to 18-11.

An attack error pulled the WildCats to within 21-14, but a kill by Wilson and an attack error by the WildCats put the Eagles ahead 23-14. A kill by the Cats' Rebecca Lesnak was offset by a kill from BC's Rachel Gaston to move the Eagles to set point at 24-15. An error by the Cats on the next point gave the Eagles the 25-15 win in the first set.

Bridgewater used a 7-1 spurt early in the second set to take a six-point lead. Leading 5-4, the Eagles used a kill by Gaston and four Randolph errors to move ahead 10-4.

The lead was still six points, 14-8, before a 6-0 run put the Eagles in control. Deja Booker and Madison Haynes combined for a block and a kill by Haynes made the score 16-8. Two straight service aces by Jenna Hamra pushed the margin to 16-8. After a WildCats error, Clark put down another kill to push the margin to 20-8 and the Eagles went on to close out the second set 25-12.

Randolph opened up an early lead in the third set before three straight points put the Eagles on top 8-7. After a Randolph hitting error, kills by Clark and Haynes put the Eagles ahead. Randolph pulled even at 8-8 on a kill by Lesnak, before a kill and a service ace by Clark gave the Eagles the lead for good, 10-8.

The lead was still two points, 14-8, when the Eagles reeled off six straight points to take command of the third set. After a pair of Randolph errors, back-to-back kills by Booker gave the Eagles an 18-12 cushion. Another Cats' error and a kill by Clark gave the Eagles a comfortable 20-12 advantage.

Clark paced the Eagles with 11 kills and Haynes added eight. Rachael Girard finished with a team-high 15 sets, followed by Wilson's 12. Macon Frey topped the charts in digs with 18.

Bridgewater is now 4-2 in the ODAC and 13-4 overall. The WildCats fall to 1-5 in conference play and 4-11 overall.

The Eagles return to the court Tuesday when they make the long road trip to play Emory & Henry in ODAC action.

Bridgewater returns home Wednesday to host non-conference foe Mary Baldwin in the program's annual Cancer Awareness Dig Pink game.
