BRIDGEWATER - The Bridgewater College women's tennis team defeated Randolph College, 8-1, Friday afternoon on Mapp Courts in a match that was closer than the final score might indicate.

Two of the three doubles matches were closely contested while four of the six singles matches were tight.

Bridgewater grabbed the first doubles point at No. 3 doubles when Rachel Zarin and Rachel Crawford defeated Randolph's Krystin Underwood and Ranita Opoku-Safo 8-3. The Eagles took a 2-0 lead when Nicole Shifflett and Stephanie Barton edged Ashley Schmitz and Sarah Mueller 8-6 at the No. 2 slot.

The WildCats salvaged a point at No. 1 doubles where Keyu Jin and Lauren Appel held off Jamiah Lewis and Whitney Kiser in a close 8-6 decision.

Lewis was the first singles player off the court as she battled past Jin 6-4, 6-4 to win at No. 1. At No. 5 singles, Zarin moved the Eagles closer to the team win when she rallied after losing the first set to defeat Opoku-Safo 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Shifflett added the clinching point at No. 3 singles with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Appel.

Bridgewater completed the singles sweep by winning the remaining three flights. Barton held off Mueller 6-4, 6-4 to take the win at No. 5 while Crawford rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6 over Shelby Lutz. Kiser came back after losing the opening set to Schmitz to win her match at No. 2 singles 6-7, 6-2, 6-2.
