BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College scored two goals in a seven-minute span during the second half Friday afternoon to defeat Bethany College, 2-1, in men's soccer action.

After a scoreless first half, the Eagles took the lead in the 63rd minute. Stephen Bishop slotted a pass between defenders and found Justin Thorburn just inside the box. The Eagles' freshman dribbled across the box, worked past a defender and beat the keeper with his shot for a 1-0 Bridgewater lead.

Less than four minutes later, the Bison tied the score off a direct kick. The Eagles were whistled for a foul just outside the box and Bethany's Jay O'Donnell took the kick. O'Donnell bent a left-footed shot around the wall and Mikel Ubeda touched the ball past Bridgewater keeper Quentin Boric, tying the score at one goal apiece.

Bridgewater regained the lead for good in the 70th minute. Leo Alcantara sent a long pass from the defensive end that found Thomas White racing past the defender. White dribbled into the box on the right side and left a pass for freshman Caleb Needle in the middle of the box. Needle directed a shot toward the near post that glanced off the keeper's hand and into the net for a 2-1 Bridgewater lead.

The Eagles' defense did the job in the final 20 minutes to preserve the 2-1 victory.

Bridgewater held a 10-5 edge in shots and a 5-2 advantage in corner kick chances. Boric finished the contest with three saves.

The Eagles are back in action Saturday afternoon when they host the Sewanee Tigers. Game time is 12 noon.
