Eagles Come Back to Win in OT

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Tessa Tierson scored on a breakaway in overtime, as the Bridgewater College field hockey team grabbed an exciting 2-1 come-from-behind victory over St. Mary's on Saturday.

The Eagles tied the game with just 2:19 remaining on a corner, with the player-advantage following a St. Mary's yellow card. The first shot was saved, but Caroline Quigley pushed the rebound to Jacqueline DiFulvio behind the keeper for the tying goal.

BC forced a giveaway late in the first overtime period and Georgia Howard went in on a 2-on-0, tapping it over to Tierson for the open net finish.

Each team had a great chance before that in OT. Bridgewater couldn't redirect an open shot at the back post, and BC goalie Ali Bishop then made an outstanding breakaway save on Gabrielle Corder the other way.

St. Mary's Alyssa Demski had opened the scoring with 13:09 left in the first half, controlling her own rebound and beating Emily Witzke inside the near post.

Quigley earned a penalty stroke for Bridgewater just two minutes into the action, cutting through the defense before getting tripped up by goalie Kelbey Egerland. Laura Gretz put the stroke wide however.

Bridgewater kept creating the best chances early. St. Mary's defender Brooke Steinhoff prevented Tierson from getting a cross to a wide open Meghan Obaugh in front of the cage, and Egerland stuck a foot out to barely prevent Howard from dribbling around her after getting past the final defender.

Claire Ashley broke up a 3-on-1 opportunity for St. Mary's with 14:40 left in the first half, and Witzke then saved a follow-up shot by Mollie Belson.

Obaugh finished off a Howard pass into the lower corner just before halftime, but was whistled for a push on her defender.

The Eagles won a corner just 30 seconds into the second half, as Tierson sliced through the defense and had her shot kicked away for a corner. For the second time in five minutes of game action Bridgewater thought they had a goal, but a whistle went as DiFulvio was finishing off a goalline scramble.

Bridgewater improves to 1-2 after getting its first win of the season against St. Mary's for the second straight year. The Eagles will travel to McDaniel on Tuesday.
