Big Hits Give Eagles Game Two Win At EMU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Bridgewater College softball team racked up 15 hits to take game two of a doubleheader with EMU 9-4 after dropping game one 7-1.

Game One: Bridgewater 1, Eastern Mennonite 7

Bridgewater scored the first run of the game on a Katrina Martin RBI sacrifice fly to right field to send Lindsey Talley across home plate. That would be the only run for the Eagles as the Royals scored seven runs in the third and fourth innings to take a commanding lead and hold on for the 7-1 win.

Stephanie Carroll had two hits for the Eagles followed by Talley, Sarah Wimer, and Mikalia Guard with one each.

Carolyn Campbell and Emily Clifford split pitching duties. Campbell allowed eight hits with Clifford allowing one.

Game Two: Bridgewater 9, Eastern Mennonite 4

After two scoreless innings, Martin got the runs started for the Eagles as she reached first on a fielding error by the shortstop. Kaitlyn Tirona advanced to third on the play and Carroll scored to put the Eagles up 1-0.

Sarah Wimer was next to bat and hit a sacrifice fly to left field, giving Tirona to opportunity to run home for a 2-0 advantage.

The hits continued in the fourth. With Katie Merhout and Emily Clifford on base, Talley hit a single up the middle to send Clifford home. Stephanie Carroll hit a big two RBI double to bring Merhout and Talley home for a 5-0 lead heading into the fifth. Sydney Layman added a RBI single with the bases loaded in the sixth to score Wimer for a 6-0 lead.

The Royals put up four runs in the bottom of the inning on a 2 RBI single and an Eagle error.

Tirona took advantage of wild pitch and ran from third to home for the Eagles seventh run. Carlita Tibbs provided an exclamation point to the game on a homerun to left center for the 8-4 lead. Carroll ran across home for the ninth and final run of the game in the seventh on a Wimer RBI single.

Carroll had two hits on three at-bats to go with two RBIs. Tirona and Tibbs totaled three hits a piece for the Eagles. Wimer added two RBIs. All ten Eagles with an at-bat totaled at least one hit.

Clifford pitched four innings, allowing four hits and three runs. Brooke Louden pitched the final three innings, allowing four hits and one run.

Bridgewater, now 17-11, has already totaled the most program wins since 2015. The team moves on to face new ODAC foe Ferrum this Saturday, April 6, on the road. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
