Softball Hits Five Home Runs In Sweep Of Ferrum

FERRUM, Va. - The Bridgewater College softball team earned two ODAC wins against Ferrum on Saturday, April 6. The Eagles hit five home runs total in the two games.

Game One: Bridgewater 5, Ferrum 1

It was a quiet start to the game for both teams with no hits recorded until the top of fifth inning until Avery Pinder singled on a bunt to the pitcher. She would score on an error by the shortstop after Kaitlyn Tirona reached on a fielder's choice.

Katrina Martin powered the Eagles to a 4-0 lead on a three RBI home run later that inning.

The Panthers scored their only run of the game on a home run by Allison McGehee in the bottom of the sixth.

Martin added one more run in the seventh on a RBI double to left field to send Tirona home for the 5-1 win.

Martin went four-for-four at bat to go with four RBIs. Kaitlyn Tirona added two hits for Bridgewater.

Carolyn Campbell pitched a complete game for her seventh win of the season. The senior allowed eight hits and one run.

Game Two: Bridgewater 9, Ferrum 0

Bridgewater had a big second inning, bringing in four runs to start the game. Martin earned the first run after Brooke Louden reached first on an error by the third baseman. Carlita Tibbs would score on a Sydney Layman RBI double to left field for the 2-0 advantage.

Lindsey Talley brought in the final two runs of the inning on a two RBI single as Layman and Louden both crossed home plate.

Tirona hit what would be the start of four consecutive home runs for the Eagles. Stephanie Carroll, Martin and Louden all hit homers in the fifth inning with Martin adding two RBIs with hers.

Seven Eagles recorded a hit with Martin and Talley totaling two RBIs each.

Brooke Louden pitched all five innings, allowing just two hits. It is the junior's eighth win of the season.

Bridgewater moves to 19-11 on the year. They have a quick turnaround as they face Mary Baldwin tomorrow, April 7, on the road. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
