Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Hampden-Sydney jumped out to a 19-5 lead in the first seven minutes of Saturday's game at Nininger Hall and led the rest of the way to defeat Bridgewater College 79-67 in ODAC action.
Davrion Grier scored Bridgewater's first 10 points and his 3-pointer at the 12:02 mark of the first half pulled the Eagles to within 21-10.
The Tigers, however, continued to control play and took their biggest lead of the first half on a 3-pointer by Chase Turner that gave the visitors a 40-18 lead with 4:43 left on the clock.
Bridgewater scored the next five points on a dunk by Grier and a 3-pointer by Chandler Murray, but a layup by Tigers' forward Jack Wyatt with 14 seconds left sent Hampden-Sydney to the break with a 42-24 advantage.
Bridgewater opened the second half with a 7-1 flurry to pull within 12 points. Murray scored five points and Liam Caswell added a layup, trimming the Tigers lead to 43-31.
The Tigers lead hovered between 12 and 16 points until two foul shots by Jalil Langston pulled the Eagles to within 64-54 with 5:06 left in the game.
A layup by Langston with 2:54 left, followed by two free throws by Grier at the 1:36 mark had the Eagles to within seven, 71-64. Hampden-Sydney's Chaise Johnson and Langston exchanged buckets to keep the margin at seven, but Turner scored with 1:08 left for a 75-66 Tigers' lead.
After Murray missed a 3-pointer, Hampden-Sydney's Jake Hahn made two foul shots to push the margin back to double figures, 77-66, with just 48 seconds left.
Grier made 10-of-11 shots, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range to lead the Eagles with 26 points. Murray scored 14 points and Langston added 10. Hampden-Sydney finished with five players in double figures, led by Wyatt's 18 points. Wyatt also grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Tigers to a huge 50-31 advantage on the boards.
Bridgewater, now 6-10 overall and 2-5 in the ODAC, will look to get back on the winning track Wednesday night when the Eagles travel to Shenandoah University.
