Box Score WINCHESTER, Va. - Bridgewater College whittled a 13-point halftime deficit down to four points in the second half Wednesday night but could get no closer as Shenandoah held on to outscore the Eagles 103-97 in ODAC action.
The Eagles matched points with the Hornets for much of the first half and trailed by six, 34-28, with just more than eight minutes left in the opening half. Shenandoah methodically added to its lead and the margin was 13 points, 47-34, when Zach Garrett hit a jumper at the 5:16 mark.
Bridgewater then scored six straight points to trim the margin to seven. Chandler Murray hit a jumper and two foul shots and Monte Simpkins added a pair of free throws, cutting the margin to 47-40 with 3:30 remaining in the half.
The Eagles were unable to slow down the Hornets' offense as the half ended with Shenandoah out front, 59-46.
Bridgewater responded with a 14-5 run to start the second half. Will Bowser got things going for the Eagles with a 3-pointer and Murray scored 11 unanswered points to pull the Eagles to within four, 64-60, with 16:32 left in the game. A layup by Fletcher Jackson kept the margin at four, 66-62, but the Eagles were unable to pull closer.
Davrion Grier hit a 3-pointer with 10:07 left in the game to pull the Eagles to within four points for the third time, 74-70, but once again the Hornets responded to maintain the lead, reeling off eight straight points to push the margin back to double figures, 82-70, with 8:49 still to play.
Bridgewater continued to battle and when Grier hit a jumper at the 4:43 mark, the deficit was once again down to four points, 87-83. The Eagles had two possessions to cut the lead further, but came away empty on each trip.
The Hornets then hit the Eagles with an 8-2 spurt to lead by 10, 95-85, with just 2:32 to go.
Murray scored a career-high 33 points to lead the Eagles. Grier added 15 points and TJ Turner came off the bench to score 13. Simpkins just missed a double-double with eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Hornets scorched the nets at a 52.4 percent clip, making 33-of-63 shots. Shenandoah was just as accurate from 3-point range, making 9-of-17 shots. The Hornets put four players in double figures, led by Garrett's 21 points.
Bridgewater, now 6-11 overall and 2-6 in the conference, returns home Saturday to host Virginia Wesleyan.
