LYNCHBURG, Va. - Bridgewater College erased a 14-point deficit in the final eight minutes Wednesday night to take a huge, 85-80, conference victory over Randolph College.
The Eagles held a two-point, 41-39, halftime lead and stretched the cushion to six, 52-46, early in the second half on a 3-pointer by Chandler Murray. A layup by Liam Caswell had the Eagles ahead 54-49 with 14:56 left in the game, but the WildCats then hit Bridgewater with a 22-3 run to open up a double-digit advantage.
Randolph reeled off nine straight points to move ahead, 58-54. The WildCats pulled even at 54-54 on a 3-pointer by Jerry Goodman and a layup by AJ Marshall put the host team up 56-54 with 13:20 remaining. After a layup by Randolph's Brian Smith, Murray knocked down another 3-pointer to make it a one-point game. Randolph then scored 13 straight points to take its biggest lead of the night.
CJ Loving hit a short jumper and Justin Dula scored inside, making the score 62-57. Tyren Hairston made a 3-pointer and Marshall added four points for a 69-57 WildCats lead. Evan Makle capped the Randolph run with two foul shots, pushing the margin to 71-57 with 8:10 left.
The Eagles started their comeback with 10 straight points to close the gap to four. Davrion Grier hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Liam Caswell added a jumper, pulling the Eagles to within 71-65. Cameron Williams added two foul shots, closing the deficit to 71-67 with 5:52 left in the game.
Randolph increased its lead back to 10 points at the 4:22 mark, but the Eagles once again responded, this time with a 9-0 spurt to make it a one-point game. Williams hit two foul shots and Grier scored inside to trim the Randolph lead to six. Murray then hit from long range, pulling the Eagles closer at 77-74. The Eagles came up with a defensive stop on a blocked shot by Grier and Murray was fouled at the offensive end. Murray missed the front end of a one-and-one, but he chased down the rebound and scored, trimming the WildCats advantage to a single point, 77-76, with 3:01 left on the clock.
Dula made 1-of-2 free throws before Williams stepped to the line and hit two straight foul shots to pull Bridgewater even at 78-78 with 2:09 left. Smith missed two free throws for the WildCats before Jalil Langston scored to put the Eagles back out front, 80-78, with 1:37 on the game clock.
Dula worked inside for a bucket to tie the score, but Murray scored after grabbing an offensive rebound to give the Eagles an 82-80 lead with 57 seconds left in the game. Randolph turned the ball over on its next offensive trip and the Eagles worked the shot clock as the WildCats played to get a defensive stop. With the shot clock winding down, Caswell hit a clutch jumper with just 17 seconds left to put the Eagles up 84-80. Murray came away with a steal on the next possession and Williams made 1-of-2 foul shots with nine seconds left to finish off the 85-80 comeback win.
Murray paced the Eagles with 23 points and Caswell came off the bench to score 16. Grier added 14 points and Monte Simpkins scored 10. Loving scored 18 to lead the WildCats and Dula finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Bridgewater is back in action Saturday afternoon for its final home game of the regular season. The Eagles will host Roanoke College with tip-off set for 2:00 p.m.
