Eagles Down Tigers To Secure Spot In ODAC Tournament

Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - Bridgewater College defeated Hampden-Sydney College, 88-82, Saturday afternoon in the final game of the regular season to secure a spot in the upcoming ODAC tournament.

The Eagles finish 9-16 overall and 5-11 in the conference to earn the No. 9 seed in the upcoming tournament. Bridgewater will now make a return trip to Hampden-Sydney on Tuesday evening to face the Tigers in a first-round matchup.

Senior forward Davrion Grier powered the Eagles to victory, scoring 24 of his game-high 28 points in the second half. Grier had plenty of help as he was joined in double figures by three teammates. Liam Caswell scored 17 points, followed by Chandler Murray with 13 and Jalil Langston with 10.

The Tigers dominated the Eagles on the boards by a 51-30 margin, but the Eagles took care of the basketball and rode a solid shooting day to the victory. Bridgewater committed just six turnovers and shot 48.5 percent from the floor (32-for-66). The Eagles made 15 shots from the 3-point range, compared to just five for the Tigers.

The Eagles trailed 41-38 at halftime, but scored the first five points of the second half to take the lead. There were nine lead changes and four ties in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Bridgewater's largest lead was six points while the Tigers biggest margin was five points in the second half.

Hampden-Sydney took its final lead with 5:35 left in the game on a 3-pointer by Ryan Clements, but Will Bowser answered with a layup on the next possession to give Bridgewater the lead for good, 76-75, with 5:15 remaining.

Bowser added a 3-pointer to make it 79-75 before two foul shots by Jack Wyatt pulled the Tigers to within two. Grier then scored inside, but Clements answered to keep the Eagles' lead at two, 81-79, with 1:46 to go. Grier knocked down a 3-pointer to push the margin to five, but the Tigers refused to go away as Kevin Quinn hit from long range to trim the deficit back to two, 84-82, with 1:09 left.

After Grier missed a short jumper, the Tigers had a chance to tie, but Clements had his shot blocked and Grier converted a dunk at the other end, giving the Eagles a four-point, 86-82, lead with 24 seconds remaining.

Jake Hahn missed inside for the Tigers and Fletcher Jackson grabbed the rebound for the Eagles with 10 seconds showing on the clock. The Tigers fouled quickly and Cameron Williams made both foul shots to put the finishing touches on the 88-82 win.
