Tigers Use Second-Half Run To Pull Away From Eagles

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Hampden-Sydney used an 11-0 run in the second half to take a 14-point lead and the Tigers went on the defeat the Bridgewater College Eagles 72-59 in the first round of the ODAC tournament Tuesday night at Kirby Field House.

Bridgewater jumped out to a quick 9-4 lead before the Tigers scored five straight to tie the score.

The Eagles later took their final lead of the game on a layup by Liam Caswell, making the score 14-13 with 9:03 left in the first half.

The Tigers then reeled off seven unanswered points to lead 20-14 with 5:39 remaining. A three-point play by Davrion Grier broke the Eagles scoring drought and a layup by Chandler Murray pulled the Eagles to within one, 20-19.

A jumper by Jake Hahn put the home team up 24-19 and the lead was 26-21 before Caswell and Murray penetrated the Tigers defense for layups to once again make it a one-point game, 26-25, with 1:41 left in the half.

Ryan Clements scored four straight points for the Tigers before Murray hit a short jumper with 34 seconds left. The half ended with Hampden-Sydney holding a 30-27 advantage.

The margin was still three points, 45-42, when Bridgewater's Cameron Williams made 1-of-2 foul shots with 11:42 left in the game.

The Tigers then outscored the Eagles 11-0 over the next three and a half minutes to open the advantage to 56-42 with just more than eight minutes remaining.

Bridgewater trimmed the margin back to single digits when Williams knocked down a 3-pointer at the 3:24 mark to pull the Eagles to within 62-54, but Jake Hahn scored inside and then added two foul shots to push the margin back to 12 points, 66-54.

A 3-pointer by Caswell cut the deficit to nine, 68-59, with 1:12 remaining but Jack Wyatt worked free for a layup and the Tigers finished off the 72-59 victory.

Liam Caswell led the Eagles with 17 points and Chandler Murray added 13. Clements and Hahn each finished with 22 points for the Tigers.

The Eagles finish the season with a 9-17 record.
