Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. - The Bridgewater College softball team lost a close game to John Carroll before blanking Alvernia on their fourth day of competition in Florida. With the split, the Eagles are now 9-3 on the season.
Game One: BC 3, John Carroll 4
After the Blue Streaks walked Sarah Wimer to start the second inning, Kaitlyn Tirona got a bunt down in front of the pitcher to put two on base. John Carroll proceeded to walk Brooklyn Fridley on the next at-bat, which opened the door for Stephanie Carroll's RBI single to send Wimer home for a 1-0 lead.
John Carroll piled on four runs in the third to put the Eagles at a 4-1 disadvantage.
Sydney Layman hit a single to third base to start the bottom of the sixth and crossed home a Torie Shifflett RBI single to the shortstop. Bridgewater found themselves within one run thanks to a clutch Kathryn Thomas RBI single to right center to send Kaitlyn Tirona across the plate to make it 4-3.
The Eagles had a chance to win it with two runners on and only one out in the bottom of the seventh but could not capitalize.
Katrina Martin, Carroll, and Thomas all had two hits for the Eagles. Brooke Louden pitched three innings, allowing four hits and one earned run. Keirsten Kennedy pitched the remaining four innings, allowing four hits and no runs.
Game Two: BC 4, Alvernia 0
Bridgewater used a four run third inning to propel themselves over Alvernia, starting with Avery Pinder's bunt to get on first base. The speedy sophomore then stole second while the Golden Wolves walked Shifflett. Pinder and Shifflett both stole bases to advance themselves and would score on Martin's 2 RBI triple to right field.
Kaitlyn Tirona reached first base on a fielder's choice and followed her classmates suit by stealing second base. Sarah Wimer delievered a RBI to center field, allowing Martin to run home and make it 3-1 Eagles.
Carroll added one more in the inning on a single to second base to send Wimer home for the 4-0 edge. Neither team scored for the remainder of the game as the Eagles picked up the win.
Pinder paced the Eagles with two hits while Martin notched two RBIs. Brantley Swift pitched a complete game, allowing five hits and no runs while striking out five batters.
Bridgewater returns tomorrow for their final day of play in Florida.
