BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Andy Pack scored 18 points, pacing three Bridgewater players in double figures, as the Eagles opened conference play with an 81-65 victory Saturday afternoon over Shenandoah.
Freshman forward Alec Topper just missed his first career double-double as he scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Point guard David Oliveras chipped in with 10 points and a team-high seven assists. Kellen Hodge narrowly missed a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds. Chandler Murray knocked down three 3-pointers to finish with nine points.
Bridgewater scored the first seven points of the game and never trailed. Jalil Langston put the Eagles on the board with a pair of free throws and Oliveras followed with a 3-pointer for a 5-0 lead. A layup by Hodge off the dish from Pack put the Eagles up 7-0 with 16:04 left in the first half.
After Marcus Taylor hit two foul shots for the Hornets' first points, the Eagles dialed in the offense from long range with 3-pointers from Pack, Matt Ciccone and Chandler Murray to bolt out to a 16-2 lead.
Shenandoah rallied, outscoring the Eagles 21-7 to pull to within four points, 23-19, with seven minutes left in the opening half.
The Eagles withstood the Shenandoah run and built the lead back to double digits. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Murray and Oliveras pushed BC to a 42-29 lead in the final minute of the first half. Shenandoah's Trammell Anthony scored after an offensive rebound just before the buzzer, trimming Bridgewater's lead to 42-31 at the half.
After Shenandoah's Zach Garrett worked inside for a three-point play to open the second half, Bridgewater went on a 17-3 run to forge ahead, 59-37.
Buckets by Topper, Pack and Langston Increased the Eagles' lead back to double figures, 48-34. Pack followed with a 3-pointer and a layup, making the score 53-34 with 15:53 remaining.
Garrett worked the paint for another 3-point play, before a 6-0 spurt pushed the Eagles' lead past the 20-point mark. Cameron Williams hit a pair of free throws before layups by Topper and Jalen Huntley made it 59-37 with 13:40 on the clock.
The Eagles, now 1-1 overall, are back in action Monday evening when they host Mary Baldwin.
