BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College women's tennis team opened conference play Tuesday with a 6-3 victory over Roanoke College on Mapp Courts.
Bridgewater took one doubles point by default at the No. 3 slot, but the Maroons won the two contested matches to take a 2-1 lead. The match at No. 2 doubles went down to the wire with Roanoke's Margriet Bostoen and Olivia Maccluen edging BC's Rachel Crawford and Ali Keister in a tiebreaker, 8-7.
The Eagles took the No. 6 singles point by default. Whitney Kiser was the first player off the court in singles action as she defeated Roanoke's Lucy Collins 6-1, 6-0 to win at No. 1 singles.
Roanoke's Halle Fernstrum kept the Maroons in contention with a 6-0, 6-2 win at the No. 2 position over Emily Daigneault, but the Eagles claimed points at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 to close out the match.
Bridgewater's Crawford rolled to a 6-3, 6-0 verdict over Bostoen at No. 3 singles and Malena Hoover downed Maccluen 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 4 position. Keister added a point at the No. 5 singles slot with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Dana Meyer.
The Eagles are back in action Thursday when they host Lynchburg.
